An Instagram reel claims that ajwain, saunf and gud cures PCOD and regulate periods in 7 days. The claim is FALSE.

Claim

In an Instagram reel it is claimed that ajwain, saunf and gud cure PCOD and regulate periods in 7 days. In the reel by annu_chaudhary_official it is said, “Is there any treatment that is completely free? Let me tell you a simple home remedy for those whose periods are irregular or who experience pain even two or three days before their period starts, especially if it is happening due to PCOD or PCOS.

Listen carefully to what you need to do. Take one teaspoon of carom seeds (ajwain) and one teaspoon of fennel seeds (saunf). Then take a small piece of old jaggery — the darker, aged jaggery that you can find at a traditional grocery or herbal store. At night, add these ingredients to two glasses of water and leave it. In the morning, boil the mixture until the water reduces to one glass. Drink this.

If you follow this for seven days, you may start noticing results. Within about a month, the problem is fixed.”

The claim can be accessed here.

Fact Check

The claim by the user is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to back the claim that ajwain, saunf and gud cures PCOD and regulate periods in 7 days.

What are Periods?

Periods also known as mensuration, menses, or “that time of the month,” is a natural biological process that occurs in females during their reproductive years. It involves a recurring cycle of physical and hormonal changes in the body. Typically starting between the ages of 12 and 15, it signals the onset of puberty and continues until menopause, which usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 50. Each individual experiences menstruation differently.

What Is Irregularity in Periods?

A typical menstrual period lasts between 2 to 7 days and recurs every 21 to 35 days. However, around 14–25% of women experience irregular periods. This can include periods that are unusually heavy or light, arrive too early or too late, involve intense cramping, or are unpredictable in timing. Some may notice spotting between cycles or even miss periods for 3 to 6 months. Such irregularities are often linked to hormonal imbalances, particularly in estrogen and progesterone. Common causes include Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), contraceptive use, breastfeeding, intense physical activity, thyroid disorders, and intrauterine devices (IUDs). Lifestyle factors like obesity, stress, and smoking may also contribute

Can Periods Be Induced Within 7 days?

In certain situations, if your period is already due or approaching, it may begin naturally in seven day. However, in cases involving PCOS, PCOD, thyroid issues, or stress-related disruptions, it is not medically feasible to induce menstruation within a single day. These conditions typically need appropriate evaluation and treatment by a healthcare professional. Additionally, if pregnancy has occurred, menstruation does not take place.

What is PCOD?

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a condition primarily caused by hormonal imbalances and genetic factors. In a typical menstrual cycle, the ovaries release mature eggs ready for fertilization. However, in PCOD, the ovaries often release immature or partially matured eggs, which may develop into fluid-filled cysts. This can cause the ovaries to become enlarged and swollen.

PCOD is also associated with an excess production of androgens (male hormones), leading to symptoms such as irregular periods, weight gain around the abdomen, thinning hair in a male-like pattern, and in some cases, infertility.

Can PCOD be cured?

According to UNICEF, PCOD is not curable due to its hormonal and genetic basis. However, its symptoms can be well-controlled through lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and stress reduction techniques.

What are the Health Benefits of Ajwain, Saunf and Gud?

Carom seeds, commonly referred to as ajwain, belong to the Apiaceae family and are widely valued for their medicinal and nutritional properties. Also known as bishop’s weed or ajowan caraway, these seeds offer a range of health benefits. They are rich in bioactive compounds that exhibit antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cytotoxic, antilithiasis, nematicidal, anthelmintic, and antifilarial activities. Nutritionally, carom seeds act as natural stimulants, sialagogues, stomachics, carminatives, and possess aromatic and antiseptic qualities, contributing to digestive health and overall well-being.
Fennel commonly known as Saunf in Hindi, is an herb from the Apiaceae family, with its seeds containing approximately 50% fiber. This versatile plant exhibits numerous pharmacological properties, including anti-allergic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-cancer, anti-stress, and cytotoxic activities. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 100 grams of fennel seeds provide 345 kcal, 15.8 g of protein, 52.3 g of carbohydrates, 14.9 g of total fat, 39.8 g of dietary fiber, along with essential minerals such as 1200 mg of calcium, 18.5 mg of iron, 385 mg of magnesium, 487 mg of phosphorus, 1690 mg of potassium, and 88 mg of sodium.
Jaggery (Gud) is a traditional natural sweetener made by concentrating the juice of sugarcane or palm. Unlike refined sugar, it retains a variety of essential minerals, including iron, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. Thanks to its distinct flavor and aroma, jaggery serves as a base ingredient in many sweet preparations around the world. Beyond its culinary uses, jaggery offers several health benefits. It can aid digestion, help ease constipation, and provide a quick source of energy, making it both a flavorful and functional food.

Can ajwain, saunf and gud cure PCOD and regulate periods in a seven days?

While ajwain, saunf and gud are often mentioned in traditional medicine and home remedies for various health benefits, there is no reliable scientific research or medical consensus to confirm that they can cure PCOD or induce menstruation that also in seven days. In cases where pregnancy causes amenorrhea, home remedies like fennel seeds, carom seeds and jaggery are ineffective in initiating menstruation or curing PCOD.
Fennel seeds are known for their health-promoting qualities, and according to Shamkant B. Badgujar et. al., they exhibit significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial effects.
Fennel seeds (Saunf) have been shown to help alleviate menstrual pain, as demonstrated in a study by Shabnam Omidvar et. al., which found that fennel can effectively help reduce pain and discomfort during periods.
Ajwain is a widely used traditional medicinal herb known for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, and it has long been valued in traditional medicine systems for supporting overall health. A study featured in the Journal of Natural Remedies revealed that ajwain seeds exhibit multiple pharmacological actions, particularly showing significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, thereby validating their traditional role in medicinal practices.

Therefore, scientific research does not support the claim that ajwain, saunf and gud have an impact on menstrual cycles. Thus, the claim that ajwain, saunf and gud cures PCOD and regulate periods in a seven days is FALSE.

Dr. M. V. Jyothsna, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad in a conversation with The Medical Dialogues Fact Check Team said, "Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD), is a complex hormonal and metabolic condition that affects women of reproductive age. It is typically associated with irregular ovulation, hormonal imbalance, elevated androgen levels, and insulin resistance. Because of these multiple underlying mechanisms, PCOD cannot be cured by any single home remedy or traditional mixture.

Ingredients such as ajwain, saunf, and jaggery (gud) are commonly used in traditional diets and may offer some general health benefits. For example, ajwain is known for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties, and saunf has mild phytoestrogen-like compounds that may sometimes help relieve menstrual discomfort. Jaggery provides iron and energy. However, there is no scientific or clinical evidence showing that these ingredients can treat PCOD, correct hormonal imbalance, or permanently regulate menstrual cycles.

PCOD management usually requires a comprehensive medical approach. Doctors typically recommend lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a healthy weight, regular physical activity, and a balanced diet, as these can improve insulin sensitivity and hormonal balance. In some cases, medications may be prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles, control symptoms like acne or excessive hair growth, or support fertility.

While traditional foods like ajwain or saunf can be part of a healthy diet, they should not be considered a treatment or cure for PCOD. Relying solely on such remedies may delay proper diagnosis and appropriate management of the condition.

If someone is experiencing irregular periods, persistent acne, excessive hair growth, or difficulty conceiving, it is important to consult a qualified doctor or gynecologist for proper evaluation and evidence-based treatment. Early diagnosis and medical guidance play a key role in managing PCOD effectively."

Dr. Hari Kishan Boorugu, Consultant Physician & Infectious Disease Specialist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad further added, "PCOD is a complex hormonal disorder linked to insulin resistance, irregular ovulation, and androgen imbalance. While ingredients like ajwain and saunf are commonly used in traditional diets and may support digestion or general wellness, there is no scientific evidence showing they can treat PCOD or normalize menstrual cycles. Managing PCOD typically requires lifestyle changes such as healthy diet, weight management, exercise, and sometimes medical treatment. Women experiencing persistent irregular periods should consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and evidence-based care."

Medical Dialogues Final Take

The claim that ajwain, saunf and gud can cure PCOD and regulate periods in a seven days is not supported by any scientific evidence. Carom seeds, Saunf and Jaggery have been traditionally used as a home remedy for the regulation of periods. However, no scientific evidence or medical consensus was found which highlighted that Carom seeds, Saunf and Jaggery cures PCOD and regulate periods in a seven days.

Hence, the claim by the user is FALSE.
