An Instagram post claims that Kali Mirch and Sonth Cures Thyroid Within a Month. The claim is FALSE.

Claim

In an Instagram post it is claimed that Kali Mirch and Sonth can Cure Thyroid Within a Month. In the reel by annu_chaudhary_official, it is said, "There are two types of thyroid – one is hyperthyroid and one is hypothyroid. In hyperthyroid, you will become fat. In hypothyroid, you will become thin. That means one type of thyroid makes you lose weight, and one type of thyroid makes you gain weight. So now I will tell you a desi remedy by which thyroid will completely finish.

You have to take 40 to 50 black peppercorns and a small piece of dry ginger, which we also call “sonth.” Crush them in a mortar and pestle, or you can grind them in a mixer. After that, strain the powder through a cotton cloth. Once you strain it, keep it in a small glass jar or small container.

Every night before sleeping, for the first 15 days, take one pinch of this powder, eat it, and then drink water on top of it. After 15 days, start taking two pinches, eat it, and drink water afterward.

Within one month, the thyroid will completely finish. Try it and see, this is my guarantee. It is a sure thing. Go ahead and try it once."

The claim can be accessed here.

Fact Check

The claim is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence to support that Kali Mirch (black pepper) and Sonth (dry ginger) can cure thyroid disorders within a month. Although these spices may offer general health benefits, thyroid conditions require proper diagnosis and medically supervised treatment tailored to the specific disorder.

Additionally, the explanation provided by the user is inaccurate. Thyroid disorders are broadly categorized into hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism; however, in hyperthyroidism, individuals typically experience weight loss, while in hypothyroidism, weight gain is more commonly observed, not the reverse as stated.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones to meet the body's needs. This underactivity slows down metabolic processes, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and depression. Common causes include autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, thyroid surgery, or radiation therapy. Without adequate thyroid hormone, many body systems are affected. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent long-term complications.

What is Hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism refers to an overactive thyroid gland that produces excessive thyroid hormones, accelerating the body’s metabolism. This condition—also known as thyrotoxicosis can cause symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and heat intolerance. It is commonly caused by autoimmune disorders like Graves’ disease, thyroid inflammation (thyroiditis), or overactive thyroid nodules (toxic nodular goiter or hot nodules). Proper evaluation and treatment are important to manage symptoms and prevent serious health issues.

Can Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism Be Cured?

While hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are not typically curable, both conditions can be effectively managed in most patients with appropriate treatment.

For hypothyroidism, treatment involves daily use of synthetic thyroxine (T4), a hormone identical to what the thyroid naturally produces. This helps restore normal thyroid hormone and TSH levels, allowing the body to function properly.

Hyperthyroidism management depends on the cause and may include antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery. These treatments aim to control or reduce excess hormone production and relieve symptoms. With regular monitoring and medical care, patients can lead healthy, balanced lives.

What are the Health Benefits of Kali Mirch and Sonth?

Kali Mirch (Black pepper), known as the "King of spices," is not only valued for enhancing flavor but also for its numerous medicinal properties. Rich in bioactive compounds like piperine, it offers antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and hypolipidemic effects. Studies have shown its potential to fight infections and reduce oxidative stress. Black pepper also possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties.

Sonth also known as Dry ginger powder is made by cleaning fresh ginger, peeling it, sun-drying or mechanically drying it until completely moisture-free, and then grinding it into a fine powder. Ginger offers numerous nutritional benefits due to its rich composition of bioactive compounds and essential nutrients. It contains key compounds like gingerol, shogaols, zingiberene, and zingerone, which are known for their potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, ginger provides essential vitamins such as vitamin B6 and minerals like potassium, magnesium, and manganese, supporting metabolic functions, electrolyte balance, and bone health. Its natural compounds may aid digestion, alleviate nausea, and may help regulate blood sugar levels, making ginger a valuable addition to a balanced diet.

Can Kali Mirch and Sonth Cure Thyroid Within a Month?

There is no credible scientific evidence indicating that Kali Mirch (black pepper) and Sonth (dry ginger) can cure thyroid disorders within a month. While these spices may contribute to overall well-being, thyroid diseases require accurate diagnosis and appropriate medical management based on the specific type and severity of the condition.

Moreover, the description of thyroid disorders provided by the user is incorrect. Thyroid conditions are primarily classified as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Typically, hyperthyroidism is associated with unintended weight loss, whereas hypothyroidism commonly leads to weight gain contrary to the explanation given.

Black pepper contains piperine, a bioactive compound known for its health-promoting effects. According to research by Maryam Mohammadi et. al., piperine may help protect the kidneys from acute injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion (a type of blood flow disturbance and restoration). This protective effect is largely attributed to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Black pepper also a staple in kitchens worldwide, is gaining scientific recognition for its medicinal value. A study published in the
International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicine
reports that black pepper exhibits a broad spectrum of pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiepileptic properties.
The therapeutic potential of ginger has been attributed to its bioactive compounds that amplify its anti-inflammatory effects. In their review, Nafiseh Shokri Mashhadi et. al. highlighted that ginger’s health benefits are primarily linked to its abundant phytochemicals, which play a crucial role in enhancing its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, as supported by contemporary scientific research.
Dry Ginger is also highly nutritious and has anti-inflammatory effects. A study by Szymczak et al. found that oral ginger consumption may help reduce pain, stiffness, and inflammation.

Hence, the claim by the user is FALSE.

Dr Pallavi Gupta, Consultant Pediatrician, SK Jain Hospital, Geeta Colony in a conversation with The Medical Dialogues Fact Check Team said, "Thyroid disorders are endocrine conditions caused by dysfunction of the thyroid gland, most commonly due to autoimmune causes such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (hypothyroidism) or Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism). These are not temporary digestive issues that can be reversed with household spices.

While black pepper and dry ginger may support digestion and have mild anti-inflammatory properties, there is no scientific evidence to show that they can normalize thyroid hormone levels (TSH, T3, T4) or cure thyroid disorders.

It is also important to correct misinformation about weight changes:

• In hypothyroidism, metabolism slows down, commonly leading to weight gain, not weight loss.

• In hyperthyroidism, metabolism speeds up, often causing weight loss, not weight gain.

The reel suggesting the opposite is medically incorrect.

Untreated thyroid imbalance can lead to serious complications including heart rhythm abnormalities, infertility, menstrual irregularities, osteoporosis, depression, and in severe cases, thyroid storm or myxedema coma.

Management of thyroid disorders requires proper diagnosis through blood tests and evidence-based treatment. Hypothyroidism is treated with levothyroxine replacement therapy. Hyperthyroidism may require antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery depending on severity.

Relying solely on home remedies may delay treatment and worsen the condition.

Always consult a qualified physician or endocrinologist for thyroid-related concerns. Spices can be part of a healthy diet, but they are not a cure for hormonal disorders."

Dr Aman Rathore, DNB, Critical Care Medicine, Max Super Speciality Hospital further added, "As a doctor, I want to clearly state that thyroid disorders are hormonal conditions resulting from dysfunction of the thyroid gland, most commonly due to autoimmune causes. These conditions require proper diagnosis through blood tests and structured medical management. There is no scientific evidence that kali mirch and sonth or home remedies can normalize abnormal TSH, T3, or T4 levels.

It is equally important to correct misinformation regarding weight changes. In hypothyroidism, metabolism slows down, which commonly leads to weight gain. In contrast, hyperthyroidism accelerates metabolism, typically resulting in weight loss not the reverse.

Thyroid disorders must be treated with evidence-based medical care under professional supervision, not unverified remedies."

Medical Dialogues Final Take

The Instagram claim that Kali Mirch and Sonth can completely cure thyroid within a month is FALSE. Additionally, the reel incorrectly explains hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, reversing their effects on weight. Thyroid disorders are hormonal conditions requiring proper medical evaluation not quick desi remedies. While black pepper and dry ginger are healthy dietary ingredients, they cannot cure thyroid disease.

The claim by the user is FALSE.
