Fact Check: Can methi, kalonji and kala chana cure Diabetes in a month?

An Instagram post claims that methi, kalonji and kala chana cures Diabetes in a month. The claim is FALSE
Claim
In an Instagram post, it is claimed that methi, kalonji and kala chana cures Diabetes in a month. The reel by desimominsydney says, "If you are a diabetes patient, the first thing you need to do is take 20 fenugreek seeds, 10 black seeds (kalonji), and about 30–40 black chickpeas. Soak them in water at night. By morning, they become soft. Chew them slowly one by one, and gradually sip the soaked water alongside. After one month, get your sugar levels tested."

Fact Check
The claim is FALSE. Methi, Kalonji and Kala chana may help in managing blood glucose levels but there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to back the claim that too in a month.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a long-term metabolic disorder in which the body either does not produce sufficient insulin or cannot use it effectively. Insulin plays a key role in regulating blood glucose levels. When diabetes is poorly controlled, it results in persistently elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia), which, over time, can damage blood vessels, nerves, and multiple organs, leading to serious health complications.
Can Diabetes Be Cured?
At present, diabetes has no definitive cure. However, some individuals can achieve remission, where blood sugar levels remain within the normal range without the need for medications. This is usually possible through consistent lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a healthy, balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity.
What are the Health Benefits of Methi, Kalonji and Kala Chana?
Fenugreek (Methi) is one of the oldest medicinal plants, known for its rich nutritional and therapeutic profile. Its seeds contain high levels of fiber, phospholipids, glycolipids, and essential fatty acids such as oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids, along with choline and vitamins A, B-complex, and C. Traditionally used as a culinary spice worldwide, fenugreek is also recognized for its potential pharmacological effects, including antidiabetic, antioxidant, hypocholesterolemic, immunomodulatory, and anticancer properties.
Kalonji (Black Seed), belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, has long been valued for its medicinal benefits. It is widely studied for its diverse therapeutic actions such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-asthmatic, gastroprotective, and anxiolytic effects. Its key bioactive compound, thymoquinone, contributes significantly to its pharmacological profile, exhibiting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, and potential anticarcinogenic properties.
Kala chana, is a nutrient-dense legume rich in protein, dietary fiber, and essential micronutrients like potassium, magnesium, and folate. It supports cardiovascular health, aids digestion, and may contribute to weight management due to its high fiber content. Additionally, its antioxidants and phytosterols may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and promote overall metabolic health.
Can methi, kalonji and kala chana cure Diabetes in a month?
The claim that methi, kalonji, and kala chana can cure diabetes within a month is FALSE. Although these foods may provide some support in regulating blood sugar levels, they cannot replace medical treatment or reverse diabetes, especially in such a short time frame.
Fenugreek has been widely recognized in traditional medicine systems for its diverse therapeutic applications and emerging metabolic benefits. Ethan Basch et. al. reported that fenugreek has been traditionally used to support metabolism, and that oral consumption of fenugreek seed powder may help lower blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
An article published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences reported that fenugreek may safely improve glycemic control and lipid profile parameters, suggesting its potential as a supportive option in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Kalonji (black seed) has demonstrated potential benefits in blood sugar regulation. A review by Naina Mohamed Pakkir Maideen et. al. indicates that black seed supplementation may help improve glycemic control in individuals with diabetes.
Kala chana offers multiple health benefits. A review by A. K. Jukanti et. al. suggests that, when included as part of a balanced diet with other pulses and cereals, it may support the management of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and digestive disorders.
Dr Prem Aggarwal, MD (Medicine), DNB (Cardiology), Director, Sanjeevan Hospital, Daryaganj, Delhi in a conversation with The Medical Dialogues Fact Check Team said, "While methi, kalonji, and kala chana are nutritionally rich and may mildly influence blood glucose, they cannot treat or reverse diabetes, especially within a short duration like one month. Diabetes is a chronic condition requiring structured care diet, exercise, monitoring, and medication. Over-reliance on such home remedies may delay appropriate treatment and even interfere with prescribed drugs. Excess intake can also cause gastrointestinal issues. Patients should avoid social media claims and consult their doctor before making any changes."
Dr. Manav Aggarwal, MBBS, DM, Interventional Cardiologist, Sanjeevan Hospital, New Delhi further added, "No natural ingredient like methi, kalonji, and kala chana alone can cure diabetes. Foods like fenugreek, black seeds, and black chickpeas can be included in a balanced diet, but they do not replace insulin or antidiabetic medicines. Depending only on such remedies can lead to poor sugar control and increase risks of complications like heart, kidney, and nerve damage. Effective diabetes care requires a holistic approach under medical supervision, and patients should be cautious of unverified online claims lacking scientific evidence."
Medical Dialogues Final Take
The claim that methi (fenugreek), kalonji (black seed), and kala chana (black chickpeas) can cure diabetes within one month is FALSE. While these foods may support blood sugar management when combined with appropriate medical treatment and lifestyle modifications, there is no scientific evidence to suggest they can cure diabetes particularly in such a short duration as it is a chronic disorder.
Hence, the claim is FALSE.
