Smartphone-Based Self-Guided Hypnotherapy Shows Promise for IBS Pain Relief: Study

Netherlands: A randomized trial published in the Gut suggests that smartphone-based self-guided hypnotherapy may help reduce abdominal pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The digital intervention offers a convenient, accessible, and non-drug approach that patients can use independently at home. These findings highlight the potential of mobile health therapies as an effective adjunct for managing IBS symptoms, although further studies are needed to confirm long-term benefits and broader clinical applicability.
- At 16 weeks, the FDA-defined abdominal pain response was achieved by 48% of patients receiving therapist-delivered hypnotherapy, 33% receiving smartphone-based self-guided hypnotherapy, and 22% receiving online psychoeducation.
- Smartphone-based self-guided hypnotherapy improved abdominal pain but did not meet the predefined criteria for non-inferiority compared with therapist-delivered hypnotherapy.
- No significant differences in psychological symptoms were observed between the three treatment groups.
- At the six-month follow-up, both therapist-delivered and smartphone-based hypnotherapy remained more effective than online psychoeducation, indicating sustained treatment benefits.
