Carbenoxolone is a Triterpenoids belonging to Antacids / Antiulcer agent.
Carbenoxolone is a drug used to symptomatically treat lip sores and mouth ulcers.
Carbenoxolone is Absorbed in the GI tract, mainly from the stomach.Carbenoxoloneis Highly bound to plasma proteins.Carbenoxolone Mainly excreted in the faeces via the bile.
Carbenoxolone shows side effects like Sodium and water retention, hypokalaemia.
Carbenoxolone is available in the form of Oral tablet and Gel.
Carbenoxolone is available in India, US, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Russia and Japan.
Carbenoxolone belongs to the Antacids / Antiulcer agent acts as a Triterpenoids.
Carbenoxolone is a synthetic derivative of glycyrrhizinic acid (a constituent of liquorice). It acts by protecting the mucosal barrier from acid-pepsin attack and increasing mucosal mucin production.

Carbenoxolone is available in the form of Oral tablet and Gel.
Carbenoxolone tablet is taken orally, usually three time daily while Gel is applied cutaneous usually four times daily.

Carbenoxolone may act by affecting both the proliferative activity of gastric epithelium and the differentiation of the epithelial cells to produce mucus.
Carbenoxolone is approved for use in the following clinical indications
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
- Mouth ulceration
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
Adult Oral Dose: 20 mg three times daily.
- Mouth ulceration
AdultTopical/Cutaneous Dose: Apply 2% gel 4 times daily.
Carbenoxolone is available in various strengths as 0.5mg.
Carbenoxolone is available in the form of Oral tablet and Gel.
Carbenoxolone is contraindicated in patients with
- Hypokalaemia
- cardiac failure and in those receiving cardiac glycosides.
- Pregnancy, elderly, child <3 yrs patients.
- Common
Sodium and water retention, hypokalemia.
- Antagonism with amiloride and spironolactone.
- Exacerbates hypokalaemia associated with diuretics.
- Risk of toxicity with digitalis glycosides.
