Iodinated Glycerol belongs to the therapy class of Expectorants.
Iodinated Glycerol is completely absorbed through the inhalation route. Onset of action of Iodinated Glycerol is achieved within 3 to 7 days whereas the peak concentrations are achieved after 9 days.A human intravenous dose study suggested an elimination half-life of about 3-4 hours for Iodinated Glycerol.
The common side effects of Iodinated Glycerol are nausea, headache, vomiting,diarrhea, acne, dermatitis, acute parotitis. etc.
Iodinated Glycerol is found to be available in the form of solution and tablets.
Iodinated Glycerol is available in the U.S., Canada, E.U., India, Australia, and Japan.
Iodinated Glycerol belongs to the therapy class of Expectorants.
Iodinated Glycerol increases the respiratory tract secretions by decreasing surface tension and thereby decreases the viscosity of mucus, which aids in removal of the mucus
Iodinated Glycerol has been approved for relieving symptoms as well as also for the treatment and maintenance of episodes of mucolytic expectorant in adjunctive treatment of pulmonary emphysema, bronchitis, bronchial asthma,cystic fibrosis, or chronic sinusitis.
Iodinated Glycerol is available in solution and tablets.
Iodinated Glycerol can be used in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Mucolytic expectorant in adjunctive treatment of pulmonary emphysema, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis, or chronic sinusitis
Iodinated Glycerol can help to relieve symptoms and also for the treatment and maintenance of mucolytic expectorant in adjunctive treatment of pulmonary emphysema, bronchitis, bronchial asthma,cystic fibrosis, or chronic sinusitis.
Iodinated Glycerol is approved for the treatment in the following clinical indications/conditions:
- Mucolytic expectorant in adjunctive treatment of pulmonary emphysema, bronchitis, bronchial asthma,cystic fibrosis, or chronic sinusitis.
Solution:
To be taken directly
Tablet:
To be swallowed as a whole with water taken with water
Solution: 50 mg/mL [25 mg/mL] (30 mL)
Tablet: 30 mg [15 mg]
Tablets and Solutions.
Smoking cessation and maintaining health are a must.
Caffeine should be avoided or limited to use as it might lead to the risk of rapid heartbeat, nausea, palpitations, nervousness,etc.
Alcohol intake is to be avoided in patients, especially those with an underlying liver disorder or liver dysfunction.
The dietary restrictions is to be be individualized as per the patient's requirements.
Iodinated Glycerol may be contraindicated under the following conditions:
- Hypersensitive to the ingredients of the medication
It is advised to use Iodinated Glycerol with caution in patients with thyroid disease or renal impairment.
Alcohol Warning
Avoid alcohol usage while on Iodinated Glycerol medication, because `alcohol can worsen the effects of any underlying disease condition such as dizziness, blurred vision, etc.
Food Warning
No sufficient scientific evidence is traceable regarding the use and safety of Iodinated Glycerol in concurrent use with any particular food.
The adverse reactions related to Iodinated Glycerol can be categorized as follows:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Acne
- Dermatitis
- Acute parotitis
- Thyroid gland enlargement
- Eyelid edema
- Pulmonary edema
- Hypersensitivity
Drug interactions with Disulfiram, metronidazole, procarbazine, MAO inhibitors, CNS depressants, lithium have been noted.

Physicians should be knowledgeable as well as vigilant about the treatment pertaining to the treatment and identification of overdosage of Iodinated Glycerol.
Symptoms overdose include metallic taste, swollen eyelids, sneezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
