Procaterol belongs to the pharmacological class of Beta 2 adrenergic agonists. Procaterol appears to have bronchodilating effects.

Procaterolhas been approved for relieving symptoms as well as for the treatment and maintenance of episodes of asthma, chronic bronchitis, and pulmonary emphysema.

Procaterol causes Beta(2)-receptor stimulation in the lung, which causes relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, bronchodilation, and increased bronchial airflow.

The common side effects associated with Procaterol are headache, nausea, insomnia, tinnitus, nasal congestion, rash, pruritus, etc.

Procaterol is found to be available in the form of oral and Inhalation.

Procaterol is available in E.U., U.A.E., India, Australia, and Japan.

Procaterol belongs to the pharmacological class of Beta 2 adrenergic agonists. Procaterol appears to have bronchodilating effects.

  • Pulmonary emphysema

Procaterol can help to relieve symptoms and also for the treatment and maintenance of asthma, chronic bronchitis, and pulmonary emphysema.

Procaterol is approved for use in the following clinical indications/conditions:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Pulmonary emphysema

Inhalation

  1. Hold the inhaler in an upright position.
  2. Cover the mouthpiece of the inhaler.
  3. Shake the inhaler three or four times
  4. Now breathe out all the air from the lungs.
  5. Now breathe in the puff through the mouthpiece
  6. Hold your breath for a second and breathe out.

Oral:

Tablet: Swallows whole with water

Syrup: To be taken directly;y as prescribed by the physician.

Asthma, Chronic bronchitis, Pulmonary emphysema

Oral Inhalation:

20 mcg (2 puffs) as directed up to 4 times a day.

Oral(tablet or syrup)

50 mcg once daily or 50 mcg twice a day.

Oral Inhalation and Systemic form (tablet and syrup).

Smoking cessation and maintaining health are a must.

Caffeine should be avoided or limited to use as it might lead to the risk of nausea, palpitations, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, etc.

Alcohol intake should be avoided in patients, especially those with an underlying liver disorder or liver dysfunction.

A diet containing food with a high sugar content as well as carbohydrates should be restricted. This includes jams, candies, chips, pies, cakes, honey, cookies, and bread. It is also advised to limit or reduce the intake of cholesterol and saturated fat and instead choose poultry, lean meat, or fish.

The dietary restrictions should be individualized as per the patient's requirements.

Procaterol may be contraindicated under the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the medication.

The adverse reactions related to Procaterol can be categorized as follows:

  • Tinnitus
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Gastric discomfort
  • Fatigue
  • Headache or dullness
  • Tremors
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia

The clinically relevant drug interactions of Procaterol are briefly summarized here:

May result in an aggravated decrease in serum K levels and cardiac adverse effects with corticosteroids (e.g., betamethasone, hydrocortisone), xanthine derivatives (e.g., theophylline), and diuretics (e.g., furosemide).

Potentially Fatal: Catecholamines (e.g., epinephrine, isoprenaline) potentiate the adrenoceptor-stimulating effects of procaterol, which may lead to arrhythmias or cardiac arrest.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy Category

Procaterol should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the possible risk to the mother and the fetus.

Nursing Mothers

Procaterol should be used during nursing only if the potential benefit justifies the possible risk to the newborn.

Geriatric Use

There is no overall difference in the efficacy and safety that has been observed between the older and the younger patients.

Physicians should be knowledgeable and vigilant about the treatment pertaining to the identification and treatment of overdosage of Procaterol.

Symptoms include tachycardiac arrhythmia, hypotension, tremor, nervousness, hypokalaemia, and hyperglycaemia. Management: Perform gastric lavage, if necessary. Provide emergency treatment and general maintenance therapy, if necessary. In case of serious tachycardiac arrhythmia, careful administration of β-blockers (e.g., propranolol) may be considered.

Pharmacodynamics

Procaterol is said to be a long-acting beta-2-adrenergic receptor agonist. Procaterol is a potent bronchodilator that may be administered orally or by aerosol Inhalation.
