Goa Assembly congratulates Goa Medical College for ranking 23rd across all hospitals in country
Panaji: Goa Legislative Assembly on Friday congratulated Goa Medical College (GMC) for ranking 23rd across all government hospitals in the country.
Moving congratulatory motion, BJP MLAs Nilkhanth Halarnkar and Dayanand Sopte said, ''This House congratulates the Goa Medical College that has ranked 23rd across all Government Hospitals in India. It is indeed a proud moment for the Health Department that the Government has made efforts and dedicatedly worked hard to bring Goa Medical College to such great heights. Thus the government's vision to make GMC the best government hospital in the country with state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure working towards a progressive and healthy Goa has been achieved.''
Goa Medical College is the successor of the 'Escola Medico Cirungica de Goa' established by the Portuguese in the year 1842 and thus one of the oldest Centre of Medical Education in this part of the world.
In the year 1963, this Medical School was upgraded as Goa Medical College, attached to the Bombay University and later in the year 1983 affiliated to Goa University. This is one of the prestigious institution of the country, recognized by the Medical Council of India, admits 100 students for undergraduate M.B.B.S. Course, while 72 Post - Graduate are admitted every year. The Goa Medical College Hospital were initially operating from Panaji and Ribandar, shifted to Bambolim in the year1991, has presently 1000 beds, whereas 80 bedded TB and Chest Disease Hospital functions from St.Inez, Panaji. Similarly, a 20 bedded Rural Health and Training Centre is situated in Mandur. The entire complex at Goa Medical College, Bambolim is spread in an area of 11,34,798 Sq Mts.
