New Delhi: With an aim for better research and development of cancer diagnosis and treatment, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently requested all the Medical Colleges/ Institutions (Private and Government) providing cancer diagnosis and treatment to register themselves with the National Cancer Registry of ICMR.
Writing to the Deans and HoDs of Pathology Department of all the medical colleges (government and private) in this regard, K. Srinidhi, Under Secretary of NMC mentioned in a recent letter dated March 20, 2023, "In order to meet the need for research and development for diagnosis, treatment, and effectively monitoring for control of cancer, all Medical Colleges/ Institutions (Private and Government) providing cancer diagnosis and treatment are advised to register themselves with the National Cancer Registry of ICMR."
For coordination and linkage-related queries, the Coordination Division of the Apex medical commission has also shared the details of the nodal officer from ICMR.
In this regard, the medical colleges have been directed to contact Dr. Prashant Mathur, Director, ICMR-NCDIR, Bengaluru. His contact details are as follows:
Email: director@ncdirindia.org; director-ncdir@icmr.gov.in
Contact: +91 94823 47643.
"This issues with the approval of Chairman, NMC," the letter further stated.
The National Cancer Registry Program (NCRP) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) was launched in 1981. It guides National Cancer Control Program by providing regular evidence on morbidity and mortality of cancers in the country. National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR), Bengaluru, is the unit of ICMR managing the registry.
NCRP is very relevant for research and development of cancer diagnosis and treatment since it helps generate reliable data on the magnitude and pattern of cancer in the country. According to ICMR website, NCRP also undertakes the epidemiological studies based on results of registry data, helps in designing, planning, monitoring and evaluation of cancer control activities under the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and develops training programmes in cancer registration and epidemiology.
National Medical Commission (NMC) is an Indian regulatory body of 33 members regulating medical education and professionals. It replaced the Medical Council of India on 25 September 2020. The commission grants recognition of medical qualifications gives accreditation to medical schools, grants registration to medical practitioners, monitors medical practice, and assesses the medical infrastructure in India. It was established for 6 months by an ordinance in January 2019. It became a permanent law passed by the Parliament of India and subsequently approved by the President of India on 8 August 2019.
