NMC directs medical colleges to join National pledge against drug abuse on August 18
New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed all medical colleges and institutions under its purview to ensure participation in the National Pledge Against Drug Abuse, scheduled to be observed tomorrow, i.e. August 18, 2026, under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA).
The NMBA was launched on August 15, 2020, under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) and is now being implemented across all districts of the country, with a particular focus on youth, women and educational institutions.
The campaign has so far reached more than 29 crore people, including over 11 crore youth and 7 crore women. It has also conducted more than 9.22 lakh awareness activities and registered around 1.19 lakh Nasha Mukti Mitras.
As part of the August 18 programme, institutions have been asked to facilitate maximum participation and ensure that employees, beneficiaries and other stakeholders take the National Pledge Against Drug Abuse.
The communication enclosed with the NMC notice also calls for coordinated observance of the pledge across schools, colleges, universities, private institutions, public institutions and government offices. Nodal officers may be designated to facilitate coordination with the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment at the State, district and block levels.
Participants are also being encouraged to take the NMBA e-Pledge and download participation certificates. Institutions have further been asked to publicise campaign material and use the NMBA logo, mascot, helpline number 14446, and other information, education and communication material for awareness activities.
The campaign authorities have also asked participating organisations to capture and report the number of people mobilised for the pledge. As per the reporting format, institutions may have to provide details including the total number of participants, the number of women and youth involved, and geo-tagged photographic evidence of the programme.
The NMC has therefore requested all Deans and Principals of medical colleges and institutions to take necessary action and ensure participation in the National Pledge Against Drug Abuse on August 18, 2026, in accordance with the instructions issued by the Government.
