NMC disassociates with Dr BC Roy National Award, Silver Jubilee Research Award, Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award
New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) will no longer be associated with the prestigious Dr BC Roy National Award, the Apex medical education regulatory body has recently stated.
Further, NMC has also announced its decision of getting disassociated with Silver Jubilee Research Award and Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award.
The Apex medical commission took this decision on the basis of its meeting with the Union Health Minister on September 26, 2022 and another subsequent meeting with the Minister of State for the Union Health Ministry on October 7, 2022.
Communicating this decision to the members of these prestigious awards and the Directorate General of Health Services, NMC Deputy Secretary Ashok Kumar stated in a letter dated 09.11.2022, "I am directed to inform that subsequent to the discussions taken in the senior office's meeting, chaired by Hon'ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare, on 26th September, 2022 and the discussions held in the meeting, chaired by the Hon'ble Minister of State for Health & Family on 7th October, 2022, it has been decided that the National Medical Commission will no longer be associated with the following awards and the Societies associated with these awards:-
(i) Dr. B.C. Roy National Award.
(ii) Silver Jubilee Research Award.
(iii) Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award."
The Bidhan Chandra (B C) Roy Award was instituted in 1973 in memory of B. C. Roy by Medical Council of India. The Award used to be presented by the President of India in New Delhi on July 1, the National Doctors' Day. Every year, the award was given in the following categories- Statesmanship of the Highest Order in India, Medical man-cum-Statesman, Eminent Medical Person, Eminent person in Philosophy, Eminent person in Science and Eminent person in Arts. However, the Award got discontinued since the last 5 years.
Earlier this year, the Union Health Ministry agreed to reinstitute Dr. B C Roy Memorial Award and confirming this, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had mentioned in a Press Release, "With the constant persuasion of Indian Medical Association, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has finally agreed to restart the process of conferment of Dr B C Roy Memorial Award ceremoniously, which was pending since last four years."
On the other hand, the Silver Jubilee Research Award had been initiated by the erstwhile Medical Council of India. The Management Committee of 'Medical Council of India – Silver Jubilee Research Award Fund' decided to invite the nomination for Silver Jubilee Research Award under the following categories.
1. To give award to person for his original and outstanding work in the field of medical and allied science done in India.
2. To give aid or assistance to project in medical colleges/medical institutions/organisations engaged in the development of medical education and to help medical research.
3. To Grant Travel Fellowship.
The value of the award is Rs.1,00,000/- and salver for category-1 and Rs.50,000/- each for categories 2 and 3 respectively.
Finally, the Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award is given under the following categories:
1. Basic Research in Medical Sciences
2. Clinical Research, and
3. Operational Research
