Abbott India Ltd. is a multinational pharmaceutical company, founded by Dr. Wallace Calvin Abbott in the year 1888. The aim of the company was to provide effective treatment to patients and their care-takers through a mixture of local and global products. The company is headquartered in Mumbai in India and in Abbott Park, Illinois in the U.S. It all started in 1888, when Wallace Calvin Abbott, a Chicago based physician, started manufacturing alkaloid extracts for the treatment of his patients. These extracts, being liquid in form, could not be stored for a long time. Though alkaloid pills started circulating in the market soon after, Abbott was not satisfied with their quality and therefore decided upon making them on his own. In 1900, Abbott Alkaloidal Company was incorporated and by the year 1905, the company had escalated its annual sale to 200,000 dollars. The firm began to expand internationally with its first affiliation in Montreal, Canada. It came to India in the year 1994 and was incorporated as Boots Pure Drug Company (India) Limited. The name of the company was changed to The Boots Company (India) Ltd. on November 1, 1971 and thereafter to Boots Pharmaceuticals Ltd. on January 1, 1991. In October 31, in the year 1995 the company was renamed as Knoll Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and in July 1, 2002 they got their present name, which is Abbott India Ltd. The company contributed greatly in World War 1 and 2 by providing innovative substitutes for German products in the U.S. Chlorazene, an antiseptic was the first product of the company used for the treatment of wounded soldiers in the First World War.

The company specializes in the health of women, gastroenterology, cardiology, metabolic disorders and primary care. It is famous for its diagnostics, medical devices and nutrition products. Infant and adult nutritional brands like Similac and Ensure are leading ones. The development of their flash glucose monitoring system called FreeStyle Libre has enabled diabetic patients to check blood glucose levels without having to stick their fingers every now and then. There are four divisions in the company, namely Primary Care, The Specialty Care-Metabolics and Urology, The Specialty Care-Neuroscience and Hospital Care divisions.

The company has its manufacturing facilities located at Goa and Baddi and Gujarat. It also has two research and development facilities at Mumbai and Bangalore in India. The company's international presence is observed in America, Asia Pacific, Greater China, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Its first international expansion happened in London in 1907.
