Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Vadodara. The company was founded in 1907 by Prof. T.K. Gajjar, Prof. Kotibhaskar and Rajmitra Mr. B. D. Amin under the guidance of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad. It was incorporated in 1907 as Alembic Chemical Works Co. Ltd. and was involved in the production of tinctures and alcohol at Vadodra in Gujarat. In the year 1940, the company started producing cough syrup, vitamins, and drugs of sulphur. The penicillin plant of the company was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1961. Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd. became the first company in India to launch their product Althrocin, which was an Erythromycin brand. The brand went on to become the best-selling brand of the company in 1997.The company was incorporated in 2010 as a fully owned subsidiary of Alembic Ltd but demerged from Alembic Group in the year 2011 to form Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd. It entered the therapeutic area of dermatology in 2012.

The company specializes in the areas of cardiology, dermatology, oncology, neurology, diabetology, antibiotics, erectile dysfunction, anti-infective and anti-cough.

The company has six Formulations facilities at Panalev, Jarod and Karkhadi in Gujarat and one in Sikkim. It also has three API producing units in Gujarat. The manufacturing plants of the company are located at Vadodara in Gujarat and at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. It also has a Research Centre at Vadodara in Gujarat. The Vadodara facility holds the biggest capacity for fermentation in the entire country. The unit at Baddi produces domestic and export formulations. The Panelav facility of the company is used exclusively for the manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients. The company is the leading producer of Macrolide anti-infectives in India. On the international level, the company has spread across a number of countries including Europe, US, Canada, Australia, Brazil and South Africa. The company’s units at Panalev, Jarod and Karkhadi are involved in the production of formulations that come under International Generics. The Research and Development facilities for the same are at Vadodara, Hyderabad, and New Jersey (USA).
