Alkem Laboratories Ltd. is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Mumbai. The company was founded by Samprada Singh and his brother Basudeo Narayan Singh in the year 1973. The company was incorporated as a private limited company on the 8th of August in the same year in the city of Patna, Bihar, under the Companies Act 1956. It got its name 'Alkem Laboratories Limited' in the year 1988. The company established its very first manufacturing facility in the year 1978 and its first research and development facility in the year 2003 at Taloja in Maharashtra. The second manufacturing unit was established at Mandava in Gujarat in the year 1992.The company operates globally and engages in the formulation, manufacture and sale of pharmaceutical and nutracuetical products. Some of the best-selling products of the company were the anti-infective drug called Taxim in the year 2006 and the drug Clavam in the year 2014. The name of the company was changed to Alkem Laboratories Limited with effect from October 26, 1988. In the year 2007, the company moved its headquarters from Patna, Bihar to Mumbai in Maharashtra.

The company specializes in the areas of gynecology, dermatology, anti-diabetic, gastroenterology, cardiology, oncology, osteoporosis, CNS, anti-infectives, rheumatology, urology, vitamins and minerals. The company’s pioneer brand since the beginning of women care division of the company is called Hemfer.

Alkem Laboratories has a total number of 21 manufacturing facilities. 19 of the facilities are situated in India while 2 of them are in the United States. The Indian manufacturing units include those at Daman, Baddi, Indore, Mandva, Ankleshwar, Pune and Sikkim. The company has an international presence in countries like US, Australia, Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and CIS. Its main markets are those of Australia, Chile, Philippines and Kazakhstan. The company ventured into the US markets through its wholly owned subsidiary called Ascend.

Recently Alkem Laboratories along with others has invested in the Bengaluru and Delaware- based cell therapy startup Eyestem Research. The firm is making a cell-based experimental treatment for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration which is also known as Dry AMD.
