Biocon India Private Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Bangalore, India. The company was founded by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw in the year 1978. It was started by Shaw with a small capital of ten thousand rupees and with only three employees. The company was established in a small shed in Bangalore as a joint venture between the Ireland-based company Biocon Biochemicals Limited and the company’s founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. The company manufactured a plant based enzyme called Papain and a hydrocolloid called Isinglass in the very beginning. One year after its inception, the company started producing and exporting enzymes to the countries of Europe and USA and became the first one to do so. Biocon Biochemicals Limited was then acquired by Unilever plc in the year 1989 who then merged it with Quest International which was its subsidiary. Biocon established its research facility in the year 1994 and named it Syngene International Pvt. Ltd. It became an independent company in the year 1998 after Unilever decided to sell its shareholdings in the company. Soon after this, the company established its manufacturing facility and started off with the production of specialty drugs. The company launched its bio-insulin Insugen and united with the US-based company Vaccinex, Inc. for the production of antibody medicines. The company also produced drugs for the treatment of cancer called BIOMAb EGFR which was the first one in the country.

The company specializes in the therapy areas of metabolic disorders, oncology, immunology, diabetology, cardiology and nephrology.

Biocon Limited has a total number of five manufacturing facilities situated in India till date. They are located in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam. The facilities produce Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients. The company also manufactures at global location with the help of its tie-ups with other companies. All the facilities have received approval from major international regulatory bodies. The company also operates a research facility in Bangalore.
