1885
Boehringer Ingelheim is a German multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Germany. It was founded by Albert Boehringer in the year 1885. The company was founded in the village of Nieder-Ingelheim which is now a part of Ingelheim am Rhein in Germany. The foundation of the company was laid when Albert Boehringer bought a small-sized tartar factory in Ingelheim am Rhein. The factory that employed a small number of twenty-eight people supplied to the food industry and was involved in the production of tartaric acid. The company was also constantly making efforts for the production of citric acid. Albert had an innovative mind which caused him to discover the manufacturing process of lactic acid with the help of bacteria and that too in great volumes. This discovery happened by chance in the year 1893 but it led to significant growth of the company. It was the first attempt at biotechnology by the company. Soon after this in 1905, Albert began with the extraction and supply of alkaloids which were plant derived active substances. With this, he put forward his first formulated drug in the year 1912 which was an analgesic and was named Laudanon. It was circulated in the markets in the year 1915.The company was renamed in the year 1893 as C. H. Boehringer Sohn the purpose of which was to honor his father Christoph Heinrich Boehringer.
The company specializes in the therapy areas of cardiovascular disorders, respiratory disorders, diabetology, central nervous system disorders, metabolic disorders, immunology, viral diseases and oncology. The company also provides for animal health and has been operating globally to provide vaccines, parasiticides and therapeutics for their well-being.
Boehringer Ingelheim has some of its major manufacturing facilities located at Shanghai and Zhangjiang in China. The company has an international presence in various countries like USA, Germany, Austria, China, France, Japan, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Greece and Georgia. The company got its first research facility in the year 1917. It was started by Heinrich Wieland who was a professor and also Albert Boehringer’s cousin. He also bagged the Noble Prize for his work in Chemistry. The company does its entire research works in the sectors of acid, alkaloid and pharmaceuticals over here. The facility started producing bile acid in the year 1917.
