Cadila Pharmaceuticals is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Ahmedabad. It was co-founded as Cadila Laboratories in 1951 by Indravadan Modi and Ramanbhai Patel who were friends since their childhood. The aim was to circulate affordable medicines in the newly independent and multinational pharma-dominated Indian markets. The production of the company started in 1952. Modi left his job of a chemist in order to start the company with his friend. Keeping only Rs 250 for his personal expenses, Modi would fund his company with the rest of the money. The operations of the business took place in a rented building with a capital of Rs 25000. They started with vitamin production to treat a prevalent post-independence disorder in India – Anemia. One of the first products launched by the company was Livirubra, which was a liquid vitamin supplement. Modi’s wife and his grandmother were his backbone and his wife went on to become the first employee of his company. Her devotion towards her husband’s business and her love for humanity led to the production of Cadila Gripe which was the first Indian gripe water. The company established its first factory in the year 1967 at Ghodasar. Cadila Pharmaceuticals was formed as a separate company in 1995, following a split in Cadila Laboratories into Cadila Healthcare and Cadila Pharmaceuticals.

The company has its manufacturing units in India at Dholka in Gujarat and Samba in Jammu. It also has an international unit at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. It has two Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient units at Ankleshwar in Gujarat. The company operates on an international level and is spread across several countries including America, Japan, Asia, Africa and Commonwealth of Independent States. Several International institutions like WHO-GMP, UK-MHRA, USFDA-API, TGA-Australia, and AIFA-Italy have given their approval to the production facilities of Cadila Pharmaceuticals.

Cadila Pharmaceuticals gave innovations in the therapeutic areas of cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer and tuberculosis in the year 2004. The company specializes in the areas of gastroenterology, cardiology, cardiovascular disorders, gynecology and diabetology.
