Cipla Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Mumbai. The company was founded by Khwaja Abdul Hameid in the year 1935 with the goal of making India self-sufficient in terms of healthcare. The vision of Hameid gained inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi who visited the company in the year 1939. On 17th of August, in the year 1935, Cipla received incorporation as a public limited company with an authorized capital of Rs.6 lakh. The company made its first acquisition in the year 1979, in the Kulaba district of Maharashtra, which was a piece of land from MIDC. Since Hameid wanted India’s independence in the health sector his company delivered actively during the World War II and India’s dependence on foreign healthcare products was kept in check due to Cipla Limited. Initially when it started, the company was known by the name ‘The Chemical, Industrial & Pharmaceutical Laboratories’. The name was later on, in July 1984, changed and the company got its present name ‘Cipla Limited’. In the same year, the company received patent proprietary for many formulations by Mr. Hameid, who did not charge any royalty. With the New Patent Law, in 1970, healthcare was made affordable for the Indians and even the most expensive of treatments was made accessible. Vivid examples of the same were the Metered-Dose Inhaler and HIV treatment.

The company specializes in the areas of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, asthma, oncology, arthritis, diabetes, depression and others and is involved in pharmaceuticals as well as diagnostics.

The company’s manufacturing facilities are located in Sikkim, Goa, Bengaluru, Kurkumbh and Indore and are approved by major international organizations. The company has an international presence in countries like Australia, Europe, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, South Africa, Uganda, Sri Lanka, UK and USA.Recently, Cipla Limited has entered into an amendment-cum-assignment agreement with Kemwell India according to which the joint venture entity will now be included in the United States of America. Additionally, Cipla (EU) has consented to get an extra 13.10 percent stake in Cipla (Jiangsu) Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Cipla EU in China.
