1975
Dabur India Limited is an Indian multinational FMGC company with its headquarters in Ghaziabad, India. The company was founded by S. K. Burman in the year 1884 and incorporated in 1975. It was established in Kolkata where Burman used to work as an Ayurvedic practitioner and was involved in the formulation of drugs for the treatment of diseases like cholera, constipation and malaria. He was a physician and gave the company a humble beginning when he started selling his formulations in Bengal on his bicycle. The term ‘Dabur’ was coined by the people who received his treatment. It was formed by blending the two words, ‘daktar’ or doctor and Burman. Following the success of his formulations, Burman began with the formal establishment of his company in the year 1884. The company set up its first manufacturing facility shortly after this in Garia and started production in large quantities. A research and development center was also set up in 1919 to give Ayurvedic products a scientific backing. At this time, the target area for research activities was personal care products and the first product that was launched by the center was ‘Dabur Amla Hair Oil’. The oil was a huge success in the markets of the country and became the highest-selling hair oil. The next brand to become extremely popular was the Dabur Chyawanprash. The company shifted its headquarters to Delhi in 1972 following some unrest in the company. The pharmaceutical business of the Dabur was demerged and put into a separate company under the name Dabur Pharma Ltd. in 2003.
The company specializes in the therapy areas of personal care, home care, digestives, health supplements and skin care.
