1936
East India Pharmaceutical Works Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The company was founded by Asoke Kumar Sen in the year 1936. After some time Hirendra Nath Duttagupta joined the company in the year 1952 and strengthened East India with his support and ideas. The company was incorporated on the 26th of April in the year 1936. East India Pharmaceutical Works Limited is among the oldest companies in the country. Since India was in the hands of the British rule during those times, both the stalwarts were faced with major difficulties. Majority of the pharmaceutical products had to be imported into India. However, the two did not succumb to challenges and managed to start innovation and development with the help of their research facility which was established as soon as two years since the inception of the company. Some of the major developments by East India Pharmaceutical Works Limited during those times were drugs like Cincophen, Sulphacetamide, Nikethamide and Quiniodochlor. The company set up its first manufacturing facility in the year 1958 at Sarsuna in Kolkata and its second one in the year 1978 at Durgapur. The Sarsuna facility was involved in the production of Ayurvedic formulations and with it, the company expanded its business. East India became global in the year 1993.
The company specializes in the therapy areas of antibiotic, dermatology, cough, digestive problems, hematinic, anti-infective, ophthalmology, anti-fungal, sedatives, analgesic, vitamin supplements, anti-pyretic, cardiovascular, anti-psychotic and anti-diabetic. Herbal medicines in the areas of immunity booster, gynecology, urology, hepatoprotective and metabolic disorders have added on to the list.
East India Pharmaceutical Works Limited has its manufacturing plants located in West Bengal at Sarsuna and Durgapur. All the facilities of the company operate according to international standards and have received approval from major international regulatory bodies. The research facility of the company started in 1938. Apart from having a dense domestic network, East India Pharmaceutical Works Limited also has an international presence in Asian, African and South American countries like Afghanistan, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Vietnam, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Chile and Brazil.
