GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Mumbai. It was founded in 1924 and was initially known as H.J.Foster & Co.Limited. The company was incorporated in 1927. It comes under the GSK. In 1856, the foundation for the company was laid when Plough Court Pharmacy, founded by Silvanus Bevan in 1715, became Allen & Hanburys and was taken under Glaxo Laboratories Ltd. The first merger that occurred was that of Glaxo Laboratories and Burroughs Wellcome & Company. A trading company called Joseph Nathan and Co. was founded in 1873, by Joseph Edward Nathan in Wellington. The company then got involved in the production of infant nutritional product made from the surplus milk produced in dairies. The product was first called Defiance and then called Glaxo in 1906 and the company was named after it as Glaxo Laboratories. It was incorporated in London in 1935 as a subsidiary company. On the other hand, Burroughs Wellcome & Company was founded in London in 1880 by Henry Wellcome, and Silas Burroughs who were pharmacists. In 1995, the two companies, Glaxo and Wellcome merged to form Glaxo Wellcome plc. The second merger that took place was that of the Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham .Thomas Beecham, a shepherd turned factory owner, founded the Beecham Group in 1848, in England, while a pharmacy had been opened in Philadelphia by John K. Smith in 1830. This business was joined by Mahlon Kline in 1865 and thus, this joint business came to be known as Smith, Kline & Co. The company was joined by French, Richard and Company and was then known as Smith Kline & French Laboratories. In the next merger, SmithKline Beckman joined hands with Beecham Group thus forming SmithKline Beecham P.L.C which was now headquartered in England. Finally, Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham came together to form GlaxoSmithKline in 2000.
The company specializes in areas of respiratory diseases, anti-infectives, gynecology, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, oncology and dermatology. It is also involved in the production of several vaccines.
