The company was founded in the year 1993 by Dr. BPS Reddy who is also the Chairman of the company and the Chairman and Managing Director of the Hetero group. The company was incorporated as a private limited company in the year 2006. Reddy had a humble background and was involved in agricultural activities in his native land which was the in the village of Kandukur in Andhra Pradesh. During the course of his education, Reddy aspired to become a teacher. He later wanted to become a professor. However, Reddy concluded that his goal was to become a scientist. At the time of its inception in the year 1993, the company Hetero was just a minor Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient producing unit. However, with the passage of time, it established multiple manufacturing facilities. Hetero began with research and development and spread quickly into manufacturing chemicals, medicines, intermediaries and formulations. The company became the leading producer of anti-retroviral medicines for the treatment of the dreaded HIV/AIDS. Hetero also became the global supplier of the anti-viral drug called Oseltamivir during the outbreak of the swine flu in the year 2009 and supplied the medicine in large quantities to various countries including India. The company’s brand was called Fluvir. The company has had major contributions during the pandemic and has launched Covifor, which is the generic version of Remdesivir. It has also manufactured multiple doses of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V.
