Himalaya Wellness Company is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The company is involved in the manufacture and marketing of herbal products under Himalaya Herbal Healthcare using Ayurvedic ingredients. The company was founded in Dehradun by Mohammad Manal in the year 1930. It was incorporated in the year 1997.The people of 1930s were influenced by the Western thinking and the demand for evidence and logic was on the rise. Manal was deeply moved by nature and had immense interest and faith in herbal cure for ailments. He wanted to popularize Ayurveda with the backing of science and research. His source of inspiration was an incident of villagers calming down a herd of berserk elephants by feeding them the roots of a herb called Rauwolfia Serpentina. This led to the launch of Serpina®, which was the first herbal anti-hypertensive medicine.

The launch of their product Liv.52 in 1955 was a major breakthrough in the history of the company. The company came to Mumbai in the 1950s but after some time, Manal’s son Meraj Manal, wanted to move to Bangalore. This was not approved by his father. Thus, he sold his flat in Mumbai to finance his plan of action. Manal shifted base from a commercial hotspot to the not-so-industrial and green city of Bangalore. This happened in 1975. The city of Bangalore provided feasible conditions for the establishment of the manufacturing plant of Himalaya. The company began focusing on research in the 70s in order to prove the efficiency and safety of their herbal products. The foreign expansion of the company to US afterwards was the most difficult event for the company and Meraj worked hard to live up to the standards of the US market. After approval from US FDA and with the implementation of DSHEA, the company launched its 'Care' range in the US which was a dietary supplement range. The company moved from pharmaceuticals to personal care products with the launch of their brand Ayurvedic Concepts, that later came to be known as Himalaya Herbals.

The company has an international presence in a number of countries including United States, Middle East, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Himalaya Global Holdings Ltd. (HGH) is the parent as well the headquarters of all the subsidiaries of the company on the international level. The company’s R&D center is situated in Bengaluru.
