Indoco Remedies Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Mumbai. The company was founded Govind Ramnath Kare in the year 1945. Kare had humble beginnings and suffered greatly by the loss of his parents at a young age. Due to poverty, he could not complete his education. He ventured into trading by selling toys on the sides of the roads which earned his a meager salary of Rs. 50. He then worked as a supplier where he used to buy goods from wholesale markets of big cities and sell them to small village markets. This gave him small profits. He gradually shifted from supplying general goods in villages to medicines to the doctors. Kare soon became a trusted point of contact and opened his own shop at Margao with encouragement from his wife. Soon after, a huge offer came to Kare from a France-based company. They put a condition on Kare to shift base to Mumbai and thus ‘Indo-Continental Trading Company’ came into existence. It was mainly involved in import of pharmaceuticals from Europe to Western India. Post-independence, the growth of Indian products was encouraged greatly by the government of India and import of some products was even prohibited by the law. However this did not dampen Kare’s spirit. To adapt to this change, Kare founded Indoco Remedies Limited on 23rd August, 1947 to produce and sell indigenous formulations. The company was incorporated in the same year.

The start of the manufacturing of products happened in Thane, in a tiny house. It was not an easy start for the company as borders between Goa and India was closed by the Portuguese Government and transport became difficult for Kare. This problem could only be resolved with the independence of Goa which took place in 1963. Suresh Kare, son of Govind Ramnath Kare, who came to the company as Managing Director two years after the independence of Goa, was the chief reason behind the escalation of the company. The company started with just fifty employees in 1969 and has grown since then.

The company established its first manufacturing unit in 1974, in Andheri. It then went on to have another unit in Waluj, Aurangabad in 1990 and in Goa in 1997. The company has three plants in Goa, two plants in Baddi and one in Waluj. The company has a global presence more than thirty-five countries including United States of America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand and South Africa.

The company’s specialization areas included that of Ophthalmic & Dental Segments in 1999. The company specializes in the areas of diabetes and cardio-vascular disorders, stomatology, pediatrics, ophthalmic, anti-infective, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal.
