Janssen Pharmaceuticals is a multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Titusville, New Jersey. The company was founded by Paul Janssen in the year 1953. After having received his education, Janssen took a loan of fifty thousand Belgian francs from his father, Constant Janssen, and set up his own laboratory in the year 1953. However, the foundation of the company were actually laid by his father who started distributing medicinal products of the Hungarian company called Richter in the year 1933. Gradually he set up his own company and established it under the name ‘N.V. Produkten Richter’. He also purchased a building for the expansion of his business. His son Paul was studying at that time and he helped him to develop the famous paracetamol called Perdolan. When Paul set up the laboratory in 1953, it was under his father’s company. The anti-spasmodic drug ambucetamide was discovered by him during this time. Paul’s business was renamed after his father as NV Laboratoria Pharmaceutica C. Janssen in the year 1956. One year later, the company got its first research facility in Beerse. The company was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in the year 1961 and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the American company. With this, the name of the company was changed to Janssen Pharmaceutical N.V.

The company specializes in the areas of mental illness, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, immunology, anesthesia, analgesia, gastrointestinal disorders, fungal infection, HIV/AIDS, anti-allergy and oncology.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals has its manufacturing located at Beerse, Geel and Olen in Belguim, Cork in Ireland, Latina in Italy, Leiden in The Netherlands, Schaffhausen and Bern in Switzerland. The company has its research and development centers at Beerse in Belgium, High Wycombe in the UK, Leiden (Janssen Biologics) in The Netherlands, Val-de-Reuil in France, Schaffhausen and Bern (Janssen Vaccines AG) in Switzerland and Toledo in Spain. It is a part of Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development and is now known as Janssen Research and Development. The company has an international presence in countries of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
