Johnson & Johnson is an American multinational pharmaceutical and consumer goods company with its headquarters in New Brunswick, New Jersey, U.S. The company was founded by Robert Wood Johnson and his two brothers James Wood Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson in the year 1886 with only fourteen employees including eight women. The brothers were inspired by Joseph Lister. Robert Wood Johnson had received training in the field of medicine at a very young age when he started working for his cousin’s pharmacy called Wood & Tittmer in New York. He also worked at Roushton & Aspinwall after this. He collaborated with another American pharmacist called George John Seabury and opened his own company in the year 1873. It was named Seabury & Johnson.

One year later, they invented an adhesive bandage together and gained popularity with their plasters. They then became involved in the discovery of sterile surgical tools. Later, the two parted ways over some disagreement and Johnson left the industry for ten long years after selling his shares in the year 1880. However, his brothers James and Edward were working in a small business that they had named as Johnson & Johnson. During this time Seabury approached Johnson again and offered him re-entry into the industry. Johnson also received partnership in the brothers’ company as he took up its management. Frederick Barnett Kilmer, a very close friend of Johnson, also served as the scientific director in the company and contributed greatly to it. He was the first one to give the process of sterilization.

The company specializes in the therapy areas of cardiovascular diseases, metabolism, immunology, infectious diseases, vaccines, neuroscience and oncology.

The company has its manufacturing facilities located in various parts of the United States. Johnson & Johnson has facilities at Shanghai in China, Titusville in New Jersey, Cork in Ireland, Helsingborg in Sweden, Baddi in India, Cape Town, and Beerse in Belgium. The company has an international presence in countries like UK, Canada, Germany, South Africa, India, Japan, US, Australia, Egypt and New Zealand.
