Lupin Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Mumbai in India. The company was founded by Desh Bandhu Gupta in the year 1968. The company was incorporated on March 1, in the year 1983. Gupta was working as a professor after receiving his education but he had a keen interest in pharmaceuticals. Therefore he went to Mumbai to work for a pharmaceutical company and started off with a small business, a vitamin company, with a sum of Rs. 5000 that he had borrowed from his wife. Later on, with financial help from the Central Bank of India, Gupta’s Lupin Limited could begin with their production. Gupta set up a manufacturing facility at Aurangabad and started with the production and supply of iron and folic acid tablets. The company was producing for a program by the Government of India called the Mother and Child Health program at that time. The company has started with vitamin production and went back to it. It shifted its focus towards tuberculosis medication after the program and produced several drugs to combat the disease. The success that he received led him to found the Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation for the welfare of the economically disadvantaged rural pockets of India.

The company specializes in anti-tuberculosis, paediatrics, CNS, cardio-vascular diseases, anti- infectives, diabetology, asthma, and anti-tuberculosis medicines, respiratory disorders, neurology, gastrointestinal disorders and women’s health.

The company started with just one facility in the year 1979 and now has several manufacturing units. Its plants in India are located at Aurangabad which started in the year 1979 and is the flagship unit of the company, Ankleshwar in Gujarat, Mandideep in Madhya Pradesh, Pune, Nagpur and Tarapur in Maharashtra, Goa, Jammu, Vadodara, Indore, Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim. The international facilities are situated in Mexico, Brazil and USA.
