Piramal Healthcare Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India and is a unit under the Piramal Group. The foundation for the company was laid by Ajay Piramal when he started the Piramal Group in the early part of the 1980s. At the initial stage, the Piramal family was involved in textile business. Ajay Piramal thought of investing in the medicine sector and he started acquiring multinational companies that were going out of the country. Thus, the company under him made acquisitions one after the other and in 1984, acquired the company called Gujarat Glass Limited which was involved in the manufacture of glass for the packaging of medicines. Few other acquisitions took place of Ceylon Company Limited and Nicholas Laboratories in the years 1999 and 1988 respectively. In 1992, Nicholas Laboratories was renamed as Nicholas Piramal India, Ltd. The group also signed multiple drug discovery and development deals with Merck Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly and Company. In 2010, Piramal Healthcare Limited was established when Nicholas Laboratories took the name Piramal Healthcare Limited and was established as a separate unit under the company. In the same year, the healthcare division was sold to Abbott Laboratories. The unit was renamed as Piramal Pharma Limited in the year 2012. The company was incorporated on the 21st of June in the year 1999.
