Sanofi S.A. is a French multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Paris. The company was founded by Jean-Rene Sautier, Jean-Francois Dehecq in the year 1973 as a spin-off of a famous oil company of France called the Elf Aquitaine. The company emerged as the result of an amalgamation of several companies like Synthelabo, Aventis, Hoechst, Sanofi and Rhône-Poulenc Rorer. The foundations for Sanofi were laid as early as in the year 1718, when a family of pharmacists founded Laboratoires Midy. The latter formed a merger with Clin Byla, which was a company in France. Together they became the Clin Midy group. Then, in 1980, the Clin Midy group was acquired by a company called Sanofi. In the year 1834, a French company called Laboratoires Dausse was founded for preparing medications from plant extracts for medical shops. In the year 1901, this company merged with Robert &, Carrière who were famous for their cardiovascular therapy. The company had merged to form Synthélabo, popular French company by the year 1970.The company then entered into the Sanofi –Synthélabo merger in 1999 and came to be known as Sanofi-Synthelabo. They worked together to produce drugs like Menactra, Lantus, Eloxatin and Taxorete which were treatments for meningitis, diabetes, colorectal cancer and lung, prostate and breast cancer respectively. In 2004, the company Sanofi-Synthélabo joined hands with the company and Aventis to continue its flight in huge markets like that of US and to fight against diseases like cancer, CNS disorders, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes and Thrombosis. This move was supported by the French government as well. The company was renamed as Sanofi-Aventis after this merger. In May, 2011 it went back to its first name Sanofi. The Indian unit of Sanofi that was started under the name Aventis Pharma is now known as Sanofi India Limited. The company was incorporated in 1994.
