Serum Institute of India is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Pune, Maharashtra, India. The company was founded by Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla in the year 1966. It was incorporated on the 22nd of May in the year 1984. The company is a part of the Cyrus Poonawalla Group. Serum Institute of India was established in the country with the aim of producing and supplying immuno-biologicals to the people of India so that they may have access to affordable treatment instead of the expensive imported ones. In the beginning, the company was limited to a small laboratory set up in an animal farm located in Hadapsar, which was involved in the production of tetanus anti-toxins. It had a small capital of twelve thousand dollars in 1967. Some of the initial products of the company included Tetanus Anti-toxin, Tetanus Toxoid, Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (DTP) vaccine and snake anti-venom. The company is involved in the production of vaccines for a large variety of bacterial, viral and other types of infections. The company made its first global acquisition with the acquisition of the Netherland-based bio-pharmaceutical company Bilthoven Biologicals in the year 2012. During the pandemic, Serum Institute of India became partners with AstraZeneca, the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company, in the production of the COVID-19 vaccine AZD1222, which is sold as Covishield. Apart from this, it has also collaborated with Novavax and Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology to produce Covovax and Sputnik V respectively. The company is the one of the biggest producers of vaccine across the globe.
The company specializes in the therapy areas of dermatology, hematology, oncology, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases, diabetology, rare diseases, cell and gene and immuno-biologicals.
Serum Institute of India has its manufacturing facilities located at Manjari in Pune. The manufacturing facilities of the company operate according to international standards and have received approval from major international regulatory bodies with MHRA, US-FDA being included in them. The company has an international presence in a number of countries including Europe, UK and Germany.
