Sun Pharmaceutical is an Indian pharmaceutical company with headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The company was founded by Dilip Shanghvi at Vapi in Gujarat in the year 1983. Shanghvi had a business background and used to help his father who was a dealer of wholesale medicinal products in Kolkata. The idea of selling his own products came to his mind during this phase. Shanghvi started a manufacturing company by the name Sun Pharmaceutical Industries in 1982 to produce his own drugs. He had a capital of just 10,000 rupees. With these modest beginnings, the company started with the introduction of five products to treat psychiatric ailments in the year 1983. There were only two members employed in the marketing team of the company. The company had a good start though and Shanghvi was able to make almost Rs 7 lakh in his first year. Subsequently, the need for a manufacturing facility grew. Hence, the company’s first manufacturing unit was established in the same year at Vapi in Gujarat for which Shanghvi had to borrow some money. It gradually added cardiology products like Monotrate and Angize in the year 1987 and gastroenterology products in the year 1989. The company had established itself in the market by the 1990s and in 1994, the company was listed on the stock exchange in an issue and oversubscribed 55 times. The founding family held the majority stake in the company. In the year 2014, Sun Pharmaceutical acquired Ranbaxy making the company the largest pharma company in India and the fourth largest across the world.

The company has more than 44 manufacturing facilities across all locations in India, U. S, Asia, Australia, and Europe, providing high-quality, affordable medicines. In India, the company’s manufacturing facilities are located (at Vapi, Panoli and Silvassa) in Gujarat, Dadra and Jammu. The company began its global expansion in the year 1996 and has an international presence in US, Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe.
