Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company and is headquartered in Ahmedabad. The company was founded by U. N. Mehta in the year 1959. Mehta, who was formerly a government employee, served as Medical Representative from 1945 to 1958 in a pharmaceutical company called Sandoz. It was in 1959 that he decided to start a company of his own called the Trinity Laboratories with a small investment of Rs. 25000. The name of the company was changed to the present one in the year 1971.The company started circulating an affordable medicine for the treatment of mental ailments in 1968. With this low price strategy and on humanitarian grounds, Torrent Laboratories was started in 1976.The company manufactured several special medicines. U.N. Mehta also became the founder-Chairman of the Torrent Group under which the company stands. The company got incorporated in the year 1972 as the company of the Torrent Group. The company got its first manufacturing facility in the year 1980 at Vatva in Ahmedabad and the second one at Chhatral, nine years later. It also has a Research and Development Centre at Bhat which close to Ahmedabad. It received its first order for export in the year 1983.The company made its first international acquisition of a company called Heumann Pharma GmbH & Co Generica KG (Heumann) in the year 2005 and entered the German market.
