New Study Finds Genetic Link Between Weight Loss Medicines and Hair Loss in Men - Video
Overview
Weight loss medicines may be linked to a slightly higher risk of male pattern hair loss, especially in men who are already genetically prone to the condition, according to a new study.
The study, published online in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, was led by researchers at NYU Langone Health. Researchers examined the GLP1R gene, which affects the body’s GLP-1 receptors, and compared genetic information with markers linked to androgenetic alopecia, the most common inherited form of hair loss.
They found that men with genetic variants linked to higher GLP-1 receptor activity were more likely to have male pattern hair loss. After researchers considered other factors, including high blood pressure, insulin resistance and low testosterone, the increased risk remained at about 7%.
GLP-1 medicines are used for diabetes and weight management. Some people taking these medicines have reported hair thinning. Until now, this shedding has mainly been linked to rapid weight loss. Hair shedding caused by rapid weight loss can often improve after weight stabilises.
The new study, however, suggests there may also be a genetic connection between GLP-1 activity and male pattern hair loss. This does not mean that taking these medicines directly causes baldness.
Researchers said the findings could eventually help identify people who may be more likely to experience hair loss while using GLP-1 medicines. They could also help scientists explore treatments that protect hair follicles.
However, the researchers did not determine exactly how GLP-1 activity might affect hair growth. The study was based on genetic databases and did not directly test hair loss in people taking these medicines.
Further research is needed to confirm the association, understand the biological mechanism and determine whether similar effects occur in women. Most participants in the databases were White, so the findings may not apply equally to all populations.
