New Study Explores How Peanuts Affect Lipids Circulating in the Blood - Video
Overview
Peanuts are often considered a convenient snack for weight watchers, but their nutritional benefits extend far beyond satisfying hunger. From improving blood fat levels to potentially supporting heart health, research suggests that this inexpensive pantry staple may offer several benefits when consumed regularly as part of a balanced diet.
A six-month trial published in Frontiers in Nutrition, known as the ARISTOTLE study, examined 63 adults who added peanuts to their regular diets. Participants consumed skin-roasted peanuts, peanut butter or a refined peanut oil spread. Researchers aimed to determine whether the benefits came primarily from peanut fats or from other nutrients present in whole peanuts.
According to the study, participants consuming whole peanuts or peanut butter experienced improvements in blood fat management, particularly reductions in triglyceride levels. High triglyceride levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Researchers suggested that whole peanuts and peanut butter may offer additional benefits because they contain dietary fibre and polyphenols, including compounds found in peanut skins.
Another study published in Public Health Nutrition examined men with elevated cholesterol who consumed peanuts daily for four weeks. The findings indicated improvements in their total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio and increases in HDL, commonly known as good cholesterol. These changes suggested improvements in certain markers associated with coronary heart disease risk.
Evidence from observational research, including the Nurses' Health Study, has also linked regular nut and peanut butter consumption with healthier cholesterol profiles among women.
However, observational studies cannot establish that peanuts alone caused these benefits, as other lifestyle and dietary factors may contribute.
Taken together, these findings suggest that peanuts can be a nutritious addition to a heart-conscious diet. They provide healthy unsaturated fats, protein and fibre at a relatively low cost.
