Study Identifies Four Pregnancy Eating Patterns Linked to Mothers and Newborns - Video
Overview
What mothers eat during pregnancy may influence both maternal health and infant growth. A new study suggests that different dietary patterns are linked with maternal weight, maternal characteristics, and infant growth.
Published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study included 1,404 pregnant women from the LIFE Child cohort in Germany. Researchers grouped their diets into four patterns: mixed diet, traditional bread-based diet, high-ultra-processed-food (UPF) diet and vegetable-rich diet.
Women following the high-UPF pattern were younger, had lower socioeconomic status, higher BMI, and greater pregnancy weight gain.
In contrast, women with the vegetable-rich diet were older, had higher socioeconomic status and lower BMI. Their babies also had a higher average gestational age at birth, although this link weakened after adjustment for maternal age and education.
The vegetable-rich group also had babies with greater birth length. This difference remained significant even after adjusting for maternal age and education.
However, the study did not find significant differences in average birth weight or the risk of babies being small or large for their gestational age between the dietary groups. About 4.4% of infants were small for gestational age, while 11% were large for gestational age.
The researchers stressed that these findings should be interpreted carefully. The study was observational, so it cannot prove that a particular diet directly caused the differences seen in mothers or babies. Diet was also assessed only once during pregnancy, and the information was self-reported, which may have introduced errors.
The participants were all from Germany and had a relatively favourable socioeconomic background, which may limit how widely the findings apply to other populations.
Overall, the study supports nutritional guidance early in pregnancy, while larger studies are needed to confirm these associations and better understand their significance over time.
