NMC Approves 49 Additional DM and MCh Seats for 2025-26 After Appeals
Through a recent notice, the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved additional super speciality seats in medical colleges across the country for the academic year 2025-26, following decisions taken by its First Appeal Committee.
In a public notice dated March 30, 2026, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) under NMC stated that these seats were granted after reviewing appeals filed by medical colleges under Section 28(5) of the NMC Act, 2019.

300 Medicos Leave PG Seats in Maharashtra; 25 Suicides Highlight Excessive Duty Hours
Around 300 resident doctors are leaving their postgraduate seats in government medical colleges in Maharashtra every year, reportedly due to excessive workload and long duty hours, a recent report by Dainik Bhaskar has suggested.
The report, which has gone viral on social media, pointed out how junior and senior residents are frequently required to work continuous 24 to 36-hour shifts, leading to severe mental and physical stress. In the past few years, 25 deaths from suicide have also been reported, allegedly linked to this pressure.

Holding that the state authorities cannot change the rules mid-way, the Jaipur Bench of the Rajasthan High Court has granted relief to three postgraduate doctors who challenged a state order that imposed a Rs 25 lakh bank guarantee requirement for admission to super speciality courses.
The bench was hearing a writ petition filed by three postgraduate doctors who approached the court under Article 226 of the Constitution, being aggrieved by the impugned order dated 28.01.2026 issued by the state health department.

In a shocking incident, a major illegal kidney and liver transplant racket has been busted in Kanpur. The joint operation carried out by the crime branch and the health department led to the detention of a doctor couple and a middleman, exposing a network that allegedly exploited vulnerable youth and sold organs for as high as Rs 80 lakh.
According to the news reports, preliminary investigations reveal that the racket was being run from a private hospital in Keshavpuram. Authorities suspect that the doctor couple orchestrated the entire operation, from sourcing vulnerable donors to arranging transplant procedures. The network reportedly extended across multiple cities and involved several accomplices.
