Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore penalty to medical colleges for backdoor entries in MBBS admissions

With the publication of the new Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 2023 in the official Gazette, medical institutes violating the norms of MBBS admission will face strict penalties as they will be liable to pay a huge fine ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crores per seat.

Although in the draft GMER 2023 regulations the Undergraduate medical education board (UGMEB) of NMC had mentioned that the medical colleges would have to pay Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore per seat as a penalty for violating the norms of MBBS admission, the amount of penalty has now been doubled in the final GMER, 2023 that was published in the official Gazette on June 2, 2023.

50 new medical colleges with 8,195 MBBS seats approved this year

In a major boost to undergraduate medical education in the country, a huge number of 50 new medical colleges have been approved this year with an intake capacity of 8,195 MBBS seats.

With this, the total number of UG medical seats in the country has been increased to 1,07,658, official sources informed PTI on Thursday. With the addition of these 50 colleges (30 government and 20 private), the number of medical colleges in the country now stands at 702, they said.

Introducing changes in the undergraduate medical education system, the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 have finally been published in the official Gazette by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Publishing the Regulations, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC mentioned, "In exercise of overall powers conferred by the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 vis-à-vis medical education in general and specifically by sub-section (1) of section 24; and sub-section (h), (i), (j), (k), (o), (p), (p), (q), (r), (s) of sub-section (2) of section 57 of the said Act, the National Medical Commission makes the following Regulations...These Regulations may be called the “Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023” or “GMER-23” in its abbreviated form."
