Exam city choice for NEET, Other Entrance Tests to be scraped from 2026
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a major change in exam centre allocation for NEET and other national-level entrance exams like JEE Main and CUET starting from the 2026-27 academic session. Candidates will no longer be allowed to choose preferred test cities; instead, exam centres will be assigned strictly based on the address listed on the candidate's Aadhaar card. This measure is aimed at enhancing transparency, curbing malpractice, and ensuring fairness by preventing impersonation and cheating. Under the new system, students from smaller towns and rural areas will be allocated centres near their Aadhaar-registered address, levelling the playing field for all.
However, students studying away from their permanent addresses are urged to update their Aadhaar details promptly to avoid travel difficulties, as no changes will be allowed once applications are submitted, reports India Today. In addition, NTA has tightened verification, requiring exact matches between Aadhaar details and Class 10 marksheets. Certificate consistency for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, or PwD candidates will also be strictly enforced to avoid disqualification. This first applies to the January 2026 JEE Main, with NEET and other exams to follow.
