Tamil Nadu Assembly Passes NEET Resolution, BJP Opposes Move

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution recently seeking the abolition of the NEET in the state. The resolution urges the Central Government to scrap the exam and instead base admissions to medical courses on Class 12 marks.

The resolution received support from the DMK, Congress, AIADMK, CPI, CPM, PMK, and Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi. However, the lone BJP MLA, M. Bhojarajan, opposed the resolution and staged a walkout.

Tamil Nadu NEET Toppers Push Score Curve Higher, MBBS Cut-Offs May Rise by 40 Marks

Tamil Nadu’s MBBS and BDS admission competition is expected to intensify in 2026, with government medical college cut-offs likely to rise by up to 40 marks for open-category candidates and 21–41 marks for some reserved categories. The state’s NEET 2026 topper scored 705/720, compared with 665 last year, while more than 6,000 students scored above 500 marks. Counselling begins on August 13. Experts, however, say higher scores do not necessarily mean tougher admissions, as seats will be allotted according to merit and Tamil Nadu’s 69% reservation policy. The open-category MBBS cut-off for government colleges could cross 570 marks, compared with 533 last year, while BC, BCM and MBC cut-offs are also expected to rise, reports TOI.

Tamil Nadu has 9,999 MBBS seats, with 7,157 entering the state counselling matrix after the All India Quota share. Around 850 new MBBS seats have been added, including 700 in private colleges, although four institutions with 800 seats have moved to the deemed-university category and will come under central counselling. BDS has 1,383 seats, including 213 in government dental colleges and 1,170 government-quota seats in self-financing colleges. Experts say BDS cut-offs remain difficult to predict as many students now prefer repeating NEET rather than choosing dentistry.

Maharashtra Allows BHMS Doctors to Practise Modern Medicine, Doctors Raise Safety Concerns

Maharashtra’s decision to allow BHMS graduates with a Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) to practise modern medicine has sparked strong opposition from sections of the medical community. The policy, notified on August 3, permits homoeopathy graduates who have completed the one-year bridge course to prescribe allopathic medicines. Critics argue that while BHMS practitioners are trained in homoeopathy, the certificate course cannot match the extensive clinical exposure, diagnostic training and patient-management skills acquired during the five-and-a-half-year MBBS programme. They contend that diagnosing complex conditions and handling medical emergencies requires years of structured medical education, making patient safety a key concern in the cross-practice debate.

Opponents of the move also question why practitioners trained in one system of medicine should be allowed to prescribe medicines from another. They argue that if the objective is to address doctor shortages, the government should instead expand MBBS seats and streamline opportunities for Foreign Medical Graduates who have already trained in modern medicine. The issue has a long legal history, with the CCMP provision dating back to 2014 and facing repeated court challenges. While doctors have withdrawn their strike following court directions, the legal and professional debate over cross-practice continues, according to The Quint report.

BJ Medical College PG Students Allegedly Work 24–36 Hours Without Weekly Off, Complaint Filed

First-year postgraduate medical students at BJ Government Medical College, Pune, have allegedly been facing 24-36 hours at a stretch without a weekly off, according to a complaint submitted before the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission.

The complaint was filed by activist J Swamidas on July 13, alleging that although all departments have formally prepared duty rosters based on eight-hour shifts and a weekly off, the system is allegedly not being implemented on the ground, except in the radio diagnosis department.
