1.28 lakh MBBS, 80k PG medical seats for 2025–26: Health Minister informs Parliament
India has altogether 1,28,875 MBBS and 80291 Postgraduate medical seats in Government and Private medical colleges across the country during the academic year 2025-2026, the Union Minister of State for Health, Smt Anupriya Patel, informed the Lok Sabha recently.
Further, the Union MoS Health informed the Parliament that four rounds of UG Counselling 2025 for MBBS seats have been completed as per the Supreme Court's order dated 16.12.2021 and the Academic Session for 2025-2026 has commenced from 22nd September 2025. A total of 72 MBBS seats in the All India Quota (AIQ) remained vacant in Government/Non-Government institutes after four rounds.

Parliamentary panel urges NMC to frame guidelines for new medical colleges in states with fewer than 100 MBBS seats per million population
A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare recently urged the National Medical Commission (NMC) to frame clear guidelines for establishing new medical colleges in states with fewer than 100 MBBS seats per million population.
The panel highlighted the challenges in the medical education sector in India in its 167th report to the Rajya Sabha.

Supreme Court seeks Centre response on plea seeking directions to declare cancer notifiable disease
The Supreme Court on Friday sought responses from the Centre and all State governments on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking directions to declare cancer a ''notifiable disease'' nationwide, in order to ensure uniform reporting, early detection, and improved patient care.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi took note of submissions made by advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal, appearing for the petitioner Dr Anurag Srivastava, a former head of the Department of Surgical Disciplines at AIIMS New Delhi.
