Consumer court orders hospital, doctors to pay compensation for anaesthesia error

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC), Amritsar recently directed the super-speciality hospital based in 2 cities and 3 treating doctors to refund Rs 7.5 lakh to a woman, whose husband went into a coma while undergoing knee replacement surgery and later died.

It was observed by the Commission that the treating facilities and its doctors did not take proper precautions due to which the patient went into a coma and the complainant had to seek treatment for her husband from a Neuro Hospital by spending around Rs 7,50,000.

HC imposes Rs 20 lakh fine on Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, orders surrender of 26 MBBS seats

The Madras High Court bench has slapped a Rs 20 lakh fine on the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for violation of the erstwhile Medical Council of India's guidelines now National Medical Commission (NMC) while admitting 26 MBBS students during the academic year 2017-2018.

Apart from imposing a fine on the institute, the HC bench comprising Justice M. Dhandapani has also issued directions to the institute to surrender 13 seats during the academic year 2025-2026 and 13 seats during the academic year 2026-2027.

NMC extends deadline for PG medical courses annual declaration, to impose fine after 22 November

Through a recent notice, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced a further extension of the Last Date for Submission of the Annual Declaration Report for PG Medical Courses.

Medical Colleges or institutes running PG medical courses have been directed by the Apex Medical Commission to submit the said report along with a fee of Rs 50,000 plus 18% GST for each PG medical course on the designated NMC portal by 22.11.2024.

Gujarat Horror: MBBS student dies after ragging by seniors, forced to stand for 3 hours

Ragging at medical colleges which continues to rise at an alarming rate has witnessed another disturbing incident from Patna where an 18-year-old first-year MBBS student of GMERS Medical College and Hospital died after allegedly being made to stand for three hours during ragging by his seniors at the college hostel. Altogether 15 seniors have been suspended and booked in a criminal case.

According to a statement of a first-year student, some junior students including the deceased student were forced to stand for around three hours and introduce themselves individually. They were also allegedly forced to sing and dance, utter abusive words and not leave the room.
