Disciplinary action against doctors over failure to prescribe generic medicines: Supreme Court seeks response from Center, NMC
Hearing a petition seeking disciplinary actions against doctors who fail to prescribe generic medicines to their patients, the Supreme Court has sought a response from the Centre, all state governments, the Ethics and Medical Registration Board of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and others in the matter.
According to recent media accounts, the apex court bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was moved by a petition that sought disciplinary actions against doctors who fail to prescribe generic medicines, as well as directions to the National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Authority to fix the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of Non Scheduled formulations and off-patented generic medicines. The petitioner also sought surprise checks on prescriptions to ensure compliance with generic drug regulations; to prohibit the use of trade names/brand names for off-patent drugs, mandating the display of only the manufacturing entity's name and such similar reliefs.

Over 1000 stones removed from 30-year-old woman's gallbladder
More than 1,000 stones have been removed from the gallbladder of a 30-year-old woman with the help of 20-minute laparoscopic cholecystectomy with only three punctures. The surgery was performed by Dr Shashank Shah, a leading laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon, LaparoObeso Centre.
During her pregnancy, when the patient was experiencing severe abdominal pain, she came to know that she had developed gallstones that were interfering with the normal functioning of her organs.

Pig kidney transplanted into human
Surgeons at NYU Langone Health have transplanted a pig's kidney into a brain-dead man and it worked normally for over a month, a critical step towards an operation the team hopes to eventually try in living patients.
The New York team have transplanted a genetically engineered pig kidney that continues to function well after 32 days in a man declared dead by neurologic criteria and maintained with a beating heart on ventilator support. This represents the longest period that a gene-edited pig kidney has functioned in a human, and the latest step toward the advent of an alternate, sustainable supply of organs for transplant.

AIIMS study reveals 30% of breast cancer cases in women under 40 years old
Data collected by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from the hospitals across city revealed that breast cancer is the most prevalent among women, while lung cancer ranks highest among men in the city.
The statistics shows that in 2015, among 1 lakh people, around 35 women had breast cancer and 17 men had lung cancer. Over the span of seven years, breast cancer cases increased by 35.9% from 2,657 to 3,611, and male lung cancer cases rose by 44% from 1,207 in 2015 to 1,734 in 2022.
