No Extra Clerkship Required for FMGs if Compensated Abroad for Online Classes, NMC Clarifies
Following protests by foreign medical graduates (FMGs) over mandatory additional training in India to compensate for online classes taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has now clarified that the medicos will not be required to undergo additional training in India if they have already completed the required compensation abroad.
The Commission stated that FMGs who had to attend online classes during their MBBS course abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic or war will not be required to undergo additional clerkship in India if they have already completed the required compensation through physical classes at their parent foreign medical institution.

Doctors Save 33-Week Preterm Baby With Rare NEC and Fungal Infection After Complex Surgeries
Doctors at a private hospital successfully managed a complex case involving a 33-week preterm infant diagnosed with Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC), severe sepsis, and a fungal infection caused by Candida parapsilosis.
The baby underwent an emergency exploratory laparotomy, where the damaged intestine was removed, and an ileostomy was performed, reported Pune Mirror. The post-operative phase was critical, requiring ventilator support, inotropes, and intensive antibiotic therapy. Due to short gut syndrome, nutrition was maintained through Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) and specialised feeds, ensuring survival during recovery.
After stabilisation and weight gain, a second surgery was performed to restore bowel continuity through ileo-colic anastomosis. With coordinated care from neonatologists, surgeons, and critical care teams, the infant showed steady improvement. Now one year old, the child has achieved normal growth and development. Experts highlighted that timely intervention, multidisciplinary care, and advanced NICU support were key to the successful outcome, underscoring the importance of specialised neonatal management in high-risk cases.
Scientists Develop Powerful New Material That Can Eliminate Hospital Pathogens on Demand
Scientists at Empa in Switzerland have developed ultra-thin graphene-based coatings that can neutralise dangerous hospital pathogens using infrared light. The innovation targets rising antimicrobial resistance, where conventional antibiotics and existing coatings are losing effectiveness.
Built using Graphene oxide combined with polyvinyl alcohol, the transparent coating can be applied to medical devices without altering their structure. Early tests showed it eliminated nearly 100% of one drug-resistant bacterial strain and over 90% of another, outperforming traditional metal-based antimicrobial coatings, reports Indian Defence Review.
The coating works through a light-activated mechanism. When exposed to infrared light, it generates heat and reactive oxygen molecules that damage microbial cells. This process can be switched on or off and controlled in intensity, offering precision treatment. Researchers are now exploring its use in dental implants in collaboration with University of Zurich, aiming to prevent infections at implant sites. While clinical application may take years, this technology represents a promising step toward safer, more effective infection control in modern healthcare.
