Supreme Court to Monitor Institutional Reforms as Centre Tightens NEET Anti-Leak Law

During the hearing of the pleas concerning the NEET UG paper leak today, the Central Government assured the Supreme Court that it would take holistic steps to protect students and ensure the integrity of the exam.

The Apex Court bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe made it clear today that it would go above and beyond to ensure that long-term safeguards are put in place. "We will monitor this. We will take that extra mile to ensure that things are put in place," the bench clarified.

NEET Paper Leak Row: NTA Terminates 47 Officials Amid Ongoing Protests

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has terminated 47 officials as part of a major crackdown following the NEET UG paper leak controversy, with sources indicating that legal and criminal action will also be initiated against some of them. The move comes as part of a wider overhaul of the examination system. Alongside the action, the Centre has appointed new secretaries in the Higher Education and School Education departments and established a fast-track court at Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court to exclusively hear cases under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.

The Union Cabinet has also approved amendments to the anti-paper leak law, proposing stricter punishment for offenders. The amendment Bill is expected to be introduced in Parliament on Monday. Meanwhile, Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh held a second round of talks with representatives of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has been leading protests over the NEET paper leak. The government said it would respond to the group's demands and reform suggestions after internal discussions, according to The Print.

NEET Row: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns Amid Nationwide Protests

The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned over ongoing NEET protests.

Announcing his resignation on X, Pradhan stated, "My young friends, for more than four decades, I have been dedicated to students, teachers, and education reforms. I have always believed that a strong, inclusive, and visionary education system is the foundation of a strong nation. I deeply respect the aspirations, emotions, and legitimate expectations of the youth of our country. Fulfilling the dreams of India's young generation has always been a moral commitment in our political and social life. I express my gratitude to the Hon'ble Prime Minister for giving me the opportunity to serve the nation under his visionary leadership. However, irregularities came to light in the NEET-UG examination held on May 3, 2026. Taking immediate cognizance of the matter, the Government of India handed over the investigation to the CBI, cancelled the examination, and announced the date for the re-examination. Along with this, it was decided that from next year onwards, the examination would be conducted in the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode."
