SC upholds MCI findings, sets aside Consumer Court order absolving surgeon, hospital of medical negligence in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Upholding the report of the Ethics Committee of the erstwhile Medical Council of India, now National Medical Commission (NMC), the Supreme Court recently held a laparoscopic surgeon at Preet Surgical Centre & Maternity Hospital guilty of medical negligence while conducting a laparoscopic cholecystectomy back in 2004.
Such a decision was taken by the Apex Court bench comprising of Justices UU Lalit, S. Ravindra Bhat and PS Narasimha as it held that the opinions and the findings of the MCI were of "great relevance" and set aside the orders of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) which had earlier exonerated the doctor and the hospital.

Monkey pox outbreak: On the cusp of another pandemic?
The world is still reeling from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries have reported monkeypox in last few weeks. Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms very similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe. It is caused by the monkeypox virus which belongs to the orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family.
NMC releases draft Registered Medical Practitioner Professional Conduct Regulations 2022
Addressing various issues of professional conduct of registered medical practitioners, the Ethics & Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced Draft of National Medical Commission, Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulations, 2022.
While releasing the draft of the regulations, the NMC has invited comments from the public and stakeholders and the last date to send the comments is June 22.

First Case of BA.5 Omicron Variant Reported in Gujarat
First case of the BA.5 sub-variant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been seen in Gujarat in a NRI (Non-Resident Indian). The 29-year-old NRI is a resident of South Africa who had visited the state in the first week of May, tested positive for the variant, Vadodara Municipal Corporation said on Tuesday. Subsequently, he tested negative for the virus and left for New Zealand on 10 May.
The patient samples were sent to a laboratory in Gandhinagar for genome sequencing. Its results were obtained on Tuesday, which confirmed the presence of the variant in the man.
