HC slams NMC for failing to act affter mother, newborn die in surgery lit by mobile torch

While considering a plea filed by a man whose wife died after undergoing a C-section operation that was conducted using a mobile torchlight, the Bombay High Court recently criticised the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The HC bench comprising Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Prithviraj Chavan observed that 'lives are precious' and asked the civic body and the Apex Medical Commission to play a 'proactive' role and ensure that no other surgery or delivery takes place using mobile torchlight in any of the civic or State-run hospitals.

Upholding the order of the Punjab High Court, the Supreme Court recently quashed the Punjab Government's decision to widen the ambit of 'NRI quota' in MBBS admissions to include distant relatives.

Observing the quota expansion to be a "complete fraud" that required to be put to an end, the Apex Court bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra noted that "This is nothing but a money spinning machine."

Dr. Avik De, under CBI probe, absent from SSKM Hospital since August 8, found neglecting duties

Dr Avik De, the one who was suspended by the West Bengal Medical Council and is under CBI investigation over his alleged presence in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where the body of the postgraduate trainee was discovered on August 9 has been found of neglecting his duties at SSKM Hospital by remaining absent since August 8.

The dean of students' affairs, Prof (Dr) Avijit Hazra at the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) and SSKM Hospital pointed out how Avik Dey operated on his own whims even after enrolling for post-graduation in surgery there. He highlighted how De neither completed the process of registration which is a part of the enrolment nor submitted the synopsis for the thesis subject as a postgraduate trainee.
