Signalling a zero-tolerance approach towards external pressure, the National Medical Commission has proposed amendments that would allow outright rejection of applications from medical colleges found attempting to influence the regulator during approvals.

In a gazette notification dated February 17, 2026, proposing amendments to the Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment and Rating Regulations 2023, the commission has revised Clause 31(h), which deals with attempts to pressurise the regulator.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the State Government to follow Rule 14(2) of the MP Medical Education Admission Rules, 2018, if there is no other legal impediment, while hearing a plea filed by a postgraduate medical aspirant seeking extension of NRI quota till the Stay Vacancy Round.

Rule 14(2) of the MP Medical Education Admission Rules, 2018 deals with the conversion of vacant seats in sub-categories during PG medical counselling. However, Rule 14(2) provides that vacant NRI seats are to be converted into unreserved seats without first exhausting the eligible NRI candidates.

The Tamil Nadu government has filed the charge sheets in three criminal cases linked to the alleged illegal kidney sale racket in Namakkal district. According to a status report submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Madurai bench of Madras High Court, 12 individuals have been named as accused in connection with the case.

A division bench comprising Justice G. Jayachandran and Justice K. K. Ramakrishnan recorded the submission and subsequently closed the public interest litigation (PIL) that had brought the issue to light. The PIL was filed by S.N. Sathishwaran from Ramanathapuram district, who raised concerns over a noticeable increase in kidney transplant procedures across multiple hospitals in Tamil Nadu and flagged the potential for misuse in the absence of strict oversight.

The Rajasthan High Court has increased the compensation awarded to the family of a 23-year-old final-year MBBS student who died in a road accident in 2015, holding that his future as a doctor could not be ignored while calculating damages.

Earlier, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal had awarded Rs 40,90,000 as compensation to the deceased’s family, claiming that the deceased was only a student and had not earned “a single penny.” Challenging this, the parents of the deceased student said that the amount is too low and sought enhancement of the compensation before the court.
