NEET UG 2026: Supreme Court to Closely Monitor NTA Reforms, Rejects Ad Hoc Measures
The Supreme Court on Friday strongly criticised the Centre over repeated NEET examination irregularities, observing that years of ad hoc measures had failed to prevent paper leaks. Hearing petitions filed by UDF Bharat and the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), a bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe said it would closely monitor the reforms being undertaken to ensure a transparent and credible examination system. The Court emphasised that competitive exams require a permanent institutional framework instead of temporary solutions.
The bench asked the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) to submit a detailed roadmap for NEET reforms, particularly its plan to shift the examination to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) model. It sought details on data security, end-to-end encryption, and safeguards to prevent cyber threats and future paper leaks. Reiterating its earlier directions, the Court stressed the need to build strong institutional memory and institutional plurality within the NTA and asked the Centre to examine adopting the CBT model used for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) while ensuring robust digital security, reports The New Indian Express.
India Has 844 Medical Colleges, 1,39,489 MBBS, 86,360 PG Seats: Health Ministry
The number of medical colleges in India has increased from 387 in 2014 to 844 at present, while undergraduate (MBBS) seats have increased from 51,348 to 1,39,489 and postgraduate (PG) seats from 31,185 to 86,360, the Union Health Ministry informed Parliament.
Replying to a starred question in the Lok Sabha on July 24, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel said the opening up of new medical colleges in the remote and underserved areas of the country, coupled with an increase in MBBS seats, will enhance the availability of doctors and further improve healthcare delivery.

Giving a major boost to medical education in Bihar, the National Medical Commission (NMC) recently approved a total of 740 additional MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges in the state.
This has raised the total number of seats in the state from 3,420 to 4,160.

SC Issues Notice on Plea Seeking FMGE Question Papers, Answer Keys Disclosure
The Supreme Court has sought responses from the authorities on a plea seeking disclosure of the question papers, response sheets and official answer keys of the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) June 2026.
The petition challenges the existing examination process on the ground that candidates are not provided access to their response sheets, question papers or answer keys, leaving them with no effective mechanism to verify their scores or seek re-evaluation.
