Supreme Court Quashes Case Against Anaesthetist, Says Doctor Not Criminally Liable for Nurse's Procedural Error

Granting relief to an anaesthetist, who had been booked in an alleged post-surgery complication death case due to the medication prescribed by her over the phone to the nurse, the Supreme Court recently discharged her.

The Apex Court bench comprising Justices Pankaj Mithal and Prasanna B. Varale set aside the Kerala High Court order refusing to quash the medical negligence case against the anaesthetist, holding that an anaesthetist would not be held guilty under Section 304-A of the IPC, for post-surgery complication, which resulted due to the improper application of medicine to the patient by the staff nurse.

Ugandan Woman Quarantined in Bengaluru Over Suspected Ebola Infection: Source

India has quarantined a 28-year-old woman from Uganda in Bengaluru after she was suspected of carrying the Ebola virus infection, marking what could become the country's first confirmed Ebola case since 2014 if test results return positive.

According to a Health Ministry source, the woman, who recently travelled from Uganda via Ahmedabad to Bengaluru, developed mild body ache but is otherwise stable. Samples collected from her have been sent for testing, with results expected within the next one to two days. The development comes amid growing global concern after the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, according to Reuters.

Following the suspected case, India has intensified screening and surveillance at airports and other entry points across the country. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda said advisories on quarantine, screening and preventive measures have already been issued, while citizens have been urged to avoid non-essential travel to Congo, Uganda and South Sudan. The India-Africa Forum Summit scheduled in New Delhi has also been postponed due to rising public health concerns in Africa. The WHO has so far confirmed 101 Ebola cases linked to the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists.
