48-hr diabetes cure drug: Doctor flags deepfake danger

Senior diabetologist Dr. V Mohan has denounced a video circulating on social media, depicting a figure resembling him endorsing a diabetes cure within 48 hours, as "fake." This incident highlights the alarming potential of such AI-generated clips as emerging health hazards.

Originally posted on the Facebook pages of the Indian Medical Association of Tirunelveli, the video rapidly gained traction. However, Dr. Mohan, who does not speak Hindi, immediately recognized the manipulation. In November 2023, he reported the video to Tamil Nadu police's cyber security cell, resulting in its removal. Nevertheless, the video resurfaced.

Supreme Court slaps contempt notice on Patanjali

Taking note of the fact that Patanjali Ayurved has been continuing to publish misleading advertisements regarding medicinal cures, the Supreme Court has slammed the Ayurveda organization and issued a contempt notice to Patanjali Ayurved and its Managing Director Acharya Balakrishna.

Even though last year in November, Patanjali had assured the top court bench that no such statements would be made, the practice continued. The Apex Court bench prima facie observed that the company has violated the undertaking and asked the company and its Managing Director to show cause why action should not be taken against them for the contempt of the court.

SC: Pay MBBS interns or scrap internship! Colleges charging Rs 1 crore, no stipend

While considering the plea filed by medical students flagging the issue of non-payment of stipend, the Supreme Court recently noted that even after charging crores of rupees for the MBBS course, the medical colleges are not adequately paying stipends to the MBBS interns.

The top Court bench comprising Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Prasanna B Varale expressed concerns at the complaints of MBBS interns in this regard. Justice Dhulia orally expressed his discontent over the stand of the medical colleges charging hefty fees on one hand and not being ready to pay stipend on the other.

3 nurses suspended for filming reels in Hospital OT

Three nurses were dismissed from service for allegedly filming reels in the operation theatre of a Dau Kalyan Singh PG Institute and Research Centre in Raipur in Chhattisgarh and sharing them on social media.

The services of Pushpa Sahu, Tripti Dasar and Tej Kumari, who were daily wage staff nurses at Dau Kalyan Singh PG Institute and Research Centre Raipur, were terminated on February 23 after a complaint was received against them, said facility deputy superintendent Dr Hemant Sharma.

IIT Madras, THSTI Faridabad develop India-specific AI model for foetus age detection

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Madras(IIT Madras) and Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), Faridabad, as part of ‘Interdisciplinary Group for Advanced Research on Birth Outcomes – DBT India Initiative’ (GARBH-Ini) program, have developed the first India-specific Artificial Intelligence (AI) model to determine the age of a foetus in a pregnant woman in the second and third trimesters precisely.

Accurate ‘Gestational Age’ (GA) is necessary for the appropriate care of pregnant women and for determining precise delivery dates. Called ‘Garbhini-GA2’, this is the first late-trimester GA estimation model to be developed and validated using Indian population data.
